They have been prolific going forward — only one team in the conference has scored more than Cincinnati’s 46 goals — but have also conceded 45 times, a vulnerability that will be tested even against a makeshift opponent. The 4-4 thriller against NYCFC at Yankee Stadium in April showcased both their attacking firepower and defensive fragility.
New York City travel light. The spine of the team has been gutted: midfield metronome Moralez, defender Martins, and wingers Wolf and Alonso Martínez are all sidelined. Axel Ojeda, who has five goals and 21 chances created this term, becomes the focal point of an attack that may be forced to lean on less-experienced squad members. The visitors’ recent form is less clear, but the personnel crisis makes this an uphill task regardless of past results.
The absence of Thiago Martins — a leader in the NYCFC defence — leaves a gap that Barlow is well-placed to exploit. With six goals and 11 of his 15 shots on target, the Cincinnati forward is the most clinical finisher on the pitch. If Bucha and Evander can supply the service they did in the 4-4 draw in April, Barlow could add to his tally against an inexperienced or reshuffled back four.
Victory for Cincinnati would open a four-point gap on their neighbours and tighten their grip on a top-seven spot. NYCFC, beset by injuries, need to grind out a result to avoid being dragged into the congested lower half of the East.
