Billal Brahimi returned to the club, Yasser Larouci arrived to reinforce the left side, Rayan Bamba joined on the right, and midfielder Daouda Traoré signed at the beginning of August. The club’s intent is clear — retain the spirit that carried them up the divisions while injecting pace and individual quality. Brest are navigating a period of transition. Julien Lachuer has replaced Éric Roy as head coach and the squad is still taking shape. Le Mans’ rise has been steep. Two consecutive promotions have delivered them back to Ligue 1 for the first time since 2010, and the Stade Marie-Marvingt is expected to generate a fervent atmosphere for this opening fixture. The club’s summer recruitment suggests they have no intention of simply making up the numbers. Brahimi and Larouci bring familiarity with the demands of the French top division, while the retention of the core group provides continuity that Brest, in the middle of a coaching change and late transfer activity, may lack on the night.
Del Castillo’s movement and Ajorque’s physical presence are Brest’s primary attacking weapons, but much of their threat also comes from wide areas. Le Mans will need their wing-backs to be disciplined; if Brahimi and Traoré can pin Brest’s full-backs deeper, it will limit the supply line to Ajorque and force Del Castillo to drop into less dangerous zones. The hosts cannot afford to focus solely on the central striker and ignore the secondary runs that made Brest difficult to contain last season.
Both sides will view this as an opportunity to bank early momentum. Le Mans face a trip to Rennes in their second match, while Brest host Toulouse before a September meeting with Paris Saint-Germain looms on the horizon. A positive start on Saturday would ease the pressure before those sterner tests arrive.
