The Blues are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 10th-place finish. Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system places heavy demands on the wing-backs, and whether James starts in midfield, at right centre-back, or as a wing-back remains a tactical talking point. His crossing ability is Chelsea’s best, but his hamstring history may persuade the manager to protect him in a less explosive role. In the centre, the Caicedo-Lavia partnership will be tasked with cutting off supply to Fulham’s advanced midfield trio.
A west London derby under the Craven Cottage lights on the first Monday night of the season carries extra edge. With both backlines missing key figures, the contest could be decided by which forward line settles fastest. Fulham’s inexperienced attack against a Chelsea defence integrating Lacroix and missing Fofana gives the match an unpredictable flavour. The result will set the tone for each club’s campaign, with Fulham aiming to prove their new formula works quickly and Chelsea intent on showing that last season’s 10th place was an aberration.
