Much of Chelsea’s creative burden fell on Cole Palmer last season before injury disrupted his campaign. The arrival of Rogers, a powerful runner and progressive carrier, should ease that load. In the 3-4-3, the pair operate in the half-spaces behind Joao Pedro, dragging opposing pivots out of position and creating overloads.
Brighton’s midfield, typically a double pivot that prizes ball retention, will have to be extremely disciplined to deny those passing lanes. If Rogers and Palmer find early rhythm, Chelsea’s home debut under Alonso could quickly gather momentum.
Even if Welbeck is restricted to a substitute cameo, his presence on the teamsheet adds a layer of narrative. The former England international spent two seasons at the Amex, becoming a fan favourite for his intelligent movement and unselfish hold-up play. Now in Chelsea blue, a late winner against his old club would be the sort of story Alonso’s new era is hungry to write.
