The visitors arrive off a dramatic 1-1 draw at home to Wrexham, where Rubin Colwill’s late strike rescued a point. Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy faces a deepening defensive crisis. Will Fish is sidelined for three months after hernia surgery, while Dylan Lawlor is ruled out of the trip to Derby. Calum Chambers remains a doubt and Gabriel Osho – who hyper-extended his knee in the Wrexham draw and left the stadium on crutches – will be assessed after Thursday’s training session. “We’re trying to get the players fit and healthy as quick as we can, while trying to continue with our recruitment strategy,” Barry-Murphy said. The shortage could force Perry Ng to deputise at centre-back, with Jack Moylan in line for a full league debut after scoring off the bench last weekend.
Derby boss John Eustace has a stronger hand. Captain Lewis Travis heads into his first full season at the club after a full pre-season, and striker Carlton Morris offers a physical focal point. The Rams do remain short in wide areas and midfield depth, but creative midfielder Bobby Clark – still only 21 – is expected to pull the strings. The summer transfer window remains open, and Derby’s recruitment team are working to add proven Championship bodies before the deadline.
Eustace’s side finished eighth last season, just outside the play-off places, and their opening reverse at Charlton followed a similar pattern to some of last term’s frustrations – conceding twice and struggling to convert chances. At home, however, Pride Park has been a venue where the Rams have historically been difficult to break down, and they will hope a vocal crowd can fuel a reaction. Carlton Morris, who missed much of 2025/26 through injury, is still working his way back to full sharpness but will be a key outlet.
The Bluebirds returned to the Championship at the first attempt after relegation in 2024/25, and under Barry-Murphy they carried strong pre-season form into the campaign, including a high-profile friendly win over Roma. Last Monday’s 1-1 draw with Wrexham was a disjointed performance, however, and the manager admitted his side “didn’t play our best game”. The comeback, driven by Colwill’s energy from the bench, at least preserved momentum. Yet with a makeshift backline and a striker in Yousef Salech who scored 15 goals in League One but is still regaining full match fitness after a neck injury, Cardiff will be tested defensively.
With Osho a major doubt, Ng could be pressed into service as an emergency centre-half. The experienced defender normally operates at right-back, and he will need to contend with the physical presence of Morris, who at his best bullies Championship defenders and brings teammates into play. How Ng handles Morris in the air and in hold-up play – particularly with Derby likely to deliver early crosses – could determine how much joy the Rams find in the final third. If Morris can occupy both Ng and a covering midfielder, space may open up for Bobby Clark to exploit behind.
Cardiff’s injury-hit defence will need to be organised from the first whistle, while Derby must turn territory into goals if they are to avoid another flat performance. Three points on Saturday would give either side an early foothold in a marathon Championship season, and a quick turnaround next week leaves little time for extended reflection.
