Swansea’s defensive resources are stretched thin. Cameron Burgess is already out for the season after rupturing a cruciate ligament in the EFL Cup defeat at Birmingham City, and midfielder Goncalo Franco is sidelined for several weeks with a thigh problem. Club captain Ben Cabango is a major doubt after leaving the pitch against Sheffield United last weekend with a heel issue. Head coach Vitor Matos admitted the 22-year-old was still being assessed, leaving Swansea potentially with only youth graduate Joe Lissah and summer signing Stephen Welsh as senior centre-back options – unless a late transfer is completed.
There is better news up front: striker Ross Stewart could feature off the bench after a shoulder niggle ruled him out of the opening weekend. Derby boss John Eustace has no comparable concerns, with no fresh injuries reported after last week’s 2-2 home draw with Cardiff City. Carlton Morris and Bobby Clark are expected to lead the attack again.
Swansea began the league season with a 2-1 win at Stoke City before a goalless stalemate at home to Sheffield United. Matos praised the clean sheet – the team’s first of 2026-27 – but acknowledged his side lacked attacking thrust. Slovenian striker Zan Vipotnik, who was the club’s top scorer last term, remains the main goal threat and will likely be the focal point again at Derby.
The Rams have yet to win a league fixture. A 2-1 opening-day defeat at Charlton Athletic was followed by a dramatic 2-2 draw with Cardiff, where they twice threw away a lead. In between, a Carabao Cup exit at Lincoln City compounded a slow start. Defensive lapses have cost Eustace’s men, but they have found the net in each of their last two outings and will sense an opportunity against a depleted Swansea backline.
Derby’s physical front pairing will test whatever centre-back pairing Swansea can field. Morris’s hold-up play and Clark’s late runs from midfield were instrumental in the fightback against Cardiff, and the pair will fancy their chances against a defence that could feature a debutant partnership. If Cabango is missing, the Swans’ composure under early pressure could determine the outcome.
A win would lift Derby off the bottom rungs of the table, while Swansea will aim to take their unbeaten run into the September international break.
