Sporting CP’s Summer Overhaul
Manager Rui Borges has been forced into a significant rebuild following a wave of high-profile departures. Francisco Trincão joined Al-Ahli for a reported €40 million, Geovany Quenda completed a €50m switch to Chelsea, Morten Hjulmand moved to Atlético Madrid for €40m, and Hidemasa Morita left for Hull City at the end of his contract. The four players accounted for 384 Primeira Liga appearances and 122 goal contributions for the club, with Trincão leading the assists chart last season with 11. Pedro Gonçalves, the emblematic forward of the 2020s, is also reportedly close to an exit, while defender Ousmane Diomande is a target for Nottingham Forest. In response, Borges moved quickly to sign highly rated 21-year-old centre-back Ibrahima Ba from Famalicão, and further additions may yet arrive before the window closes.
Guimarães Under New Management
Vitoria Guimarães also enter a new chapter. The Minho club ended a 13-year trophy drought by lifting the Taça da Liga in January 2026, but a disappointing league campaign – finishing on 42 points – prompted a managerial change. Luis Pinto was dismissed and replaced temporarily by B-team coach Gil Lameiras, before Tiago Margarido was appointed during the summer to lead the side into the 2026-27 season. Margarido took charge of his first competitive match away at Arouca on the opening weekend, and this trip to face Sporting represents his second test at the helm.
Key Battle: Midfield Control
With Hjulmand and Morita gone, Sporting will rely on a restructured engine room to set the tempo against a Guimarães side that will try to disrupt their rhythm.
