The matchday-one fixture pits the Lilies against a Kiel side that finished the previous season strongly, while Darmstadt will look to new South Korean striker Lee Ho-jae for an immediate spark.
South Korean forward Lee Ho-jae, 26, joined Darmstadt from Pohang Steelers in late July and could make his European debut in this opening fixture. The former South Korea international – son of ex-K League stalwart Lee Ki-hyung – said upon signing: “I want to wear the Darmstadt jersey and step onto the field as soon as possible.” He added that repaying the club’s trust “with many goals” was his biggest motivation. Head coach’s early comments suggest Lee is in contention for a starting role.
Darmstadt and Holstein Kiel have met 18 times since 2013, with the Lilies winning seven, Kiel four, and seven draws. Recent form, however, tilts towards the visitors: over the last five encounters Darmstadt have won one, drawn one and lost three, while Kiel are unbeaten in that same stretch with four wins and a draw. The last meeting at the Merck-Stadion ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Kiel arrive in Darmstadt carrying momentum from the end of the previous season. Across their last five matches they recorded four victories and a draw, scoring two goals per game. Even though they lost versatile midfielder Nicolai Remberg – who was named Hamburg captain this summer after 32 Bundesliga appearances for Kiel in 2024/25 – the Storks’ underlying numbers suggest they remain a well-drilled unit capable of controlling the tempo on the road.
Neither side has reported significant injury concerns ahead of the new season. Both managers are expected to have close to a full squad to choose from, though confirmation of the starting line-ups will come closer to kick-off. Darmstadt’s only known change is the integration of Lee Ho-jae, while Kiel will likely rely on the core that delivered their strong end-of-campaign form.
A positive result on opening day could set the tone for Darmstadt’s push to return to the Bundesliga, while Kiel aim to maintain their upward momentum. The reverse fixture is scheduled for 20 December at the Holstein-Stadion.
