Ferencvaros travel without two important midfielders. Naby Keita remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury, while Philippe Rommens is ruled out through suspension after a red card in the qualifying campaign. Gornik arrive at the second leg in uncertain shape. They have lost two of their four matches this season and were eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers by Fenerbahce, a 2-1 aggregate defeat in which they struggled to create clear chances. They have also lost their last two away matches.
Ferencvaros, in contrast, have been one of the standout sides in early European action. They have won three of their last four Europa League fixtures and already eliminated two opponents in this season’s qualifiers, displaying attacking verve and defensive organisation.
Israeli international Gabi Kanichowsky has been instrumental as Ferencvaros’ creative hub. Operating as the attacking midfielder, his close control and eye for a through ball will test Gornik’s centre-backs Janicki and Josema. If Gornik cannot close him down quickly, Kanichowsky is likely to find the pockets of space that decide the tie.
The home crowd may not be at its full force. Gornik have confirmed that a UEFA sanction limits the number of available seats for this fixture. The club has appealed to open the closed southern stand to children, women, staff and players’ families, but final permission is pending. Ticket sales are prioritised for season ticket holders, meaning the usual fervour of the 31,871-capacity ground will be dampened.
After the first leg in Hungary, the second leg will determine who progresses to the Europa League play-off round. Gornik must make the most of home soil, while Ferencvaros will aim to protect whatever advantage they built in Budapest.
