The Icelandic side earned their place in this round after a gritty 1-0 aggregate victory over Zrinjski Mostar, while the Danish visitors thrashed GAIS 6-0 in the previous round to overturn a first-leg deficit.
The stakes are high for both clubs. For Valur, reaching the play-off round would represent one of their most significant European runs since the 2018-19 campaign. Nordsjaelland, fresh off their best league finish in over a decade, will expect to carry their attacking momentum into this tie and take a lead back to Denmark.
Jens Fonsskov Olsen’s Nordsjaelland side will be without two long-term absentees for the trip to Iceland. Araphat Mohammed and Souleymane Alio have not featured for the Tigers since 2025 and continue their rehabilitation from serious injuries.
The visitors do, however, arrive with attacking confidence. Runar Norheim scored twice in the demolition of GAIS and is expected to retain his place in the starting XI. Villum Berthelsen, Prince Amoako Junior, and Hjalte Boe Rasmussen are also likely to continue in attack, giving Olsen a settled forward line.
Valur have not reported significant injury concerns, and their defensive resilience — demonstrated against Zrinjski — will be crucial if they are to keep the tie alive ahead of the return leg in Denmark.
Valur’s European campaign has been built on narrow margins and defensive discipline. The decisive moment of their previous tie came in the 64th minute at Hildarendi, where Tryggvi Hrafn Haraldsson scored the only goal over two legs against Zrinjski Mostar.
Their European pedigree in recent years has been limited. That victory was only Valur’s second win in UEFA competition since reaching the third qualifying round of the 2018-19 Europa League. Playing in front of the compact Origovöllurinn crowd, they will relish the role of underdogs once more.
The Tigers have been inconsistent domestically — drawing 1-1 at Horsens and searching for a first Superliga win of the new season — but their response in Europe was emphatic. Trailing after the first leg against GAIS, Nordsjaelland delivered their biggest win of the campaign at Right to Dream Park, putting six unanswered goals past the Swedish visitors.
That performance highlighted the depth of Olsen’s young squad. Nordsjaelland finished third in the Danish top flight in 2025-26, recording 15 wins and securing their highest league position since the 2012-13 season. Their blend of academy talent and progressive football makes them a formidable opponent at this stage of the competition.
The tie’s central contest will be Valur’s organised defensive block against Nordsjaelland’s movement in the final third. After shutting out Zrinjski over 180 minutes, Valur have shown they can frustrate technically superior opponents and seize a moment on the counter — exactly the formula Haraldsson executed in the last round.
Nordsjaelland’s approach under Olsen relies on quick combinations and width. The Icelandic hosts will need to maintain their concentration for the full 90 minutes, knowing that the Tigers’ young attackers — Norheim and Berthelsen in particular — can punish lapses ruthlessly, as they demonstrated against GAIS.
The second leg at Right to Dream Park will follow in a week’s time. A positive result at Origovöllurinn would give Valur a genuine chance of reaching the play-off round and another shot at a club-defining European scalp.
