İsmail Kartal’s side navigated Sturm Graz with a 3-0 aggregate win, while Lyon overturned a first-leg deficit to beat Sparta Prague 4-2 on aggregate to set up this decisive tie.
Lyon travel to Turkey without three important contributors. Centre-back Jason Denayer is sidelined by a knock, fellow defender Sinaly Diomandé is out with an ankle/foot injury, and creative midfielder Rayan Cherki remains unavailable because of an ankle fracture. Cherki’s absence robs Paulo Fonseca of a ball-carrier who can unlock compact defences, putting extra creative responsibility on the wide pairing of Ernest Nuamah and Malick Fofana.
Fenerbahçe have absences of their own. Brazilian forward João Pedro is ruled out with a knee problem, and defender Nazım Sangaré is a long-term absentee after an ACL knee ligament injury. On a more positive note, Vedat Muriqi made his return from the bench in the closing stages of the second leg against Sturm Graz, giving Kartal an additional physical option in attack.
Anderson Talisca has been Fenerbahçe’s standout performer in qualifying, finding the net in both legs against Sturm Graz and scoring in all three of his previous Champions League qualifying appearances this season. His late runs from midfield and ability to finish from deep positions make him a constant threat, particularly against a Lyon backline that will be missing two starting-calibre centre-halves. Kerem Aktürkoğlu, N’Golo Kanté, Matteo Guendouzi and Milan Škriniar are also expected to provide experience and structure.
Lyon’s 3-0 second-leg demolition of Sparta Prague showcased their attacking depth. Nuamah opened the scoring, Ainsley Maitland-Niles doubled the lead and Tyler Morton added a third after the Czech side had a player sent off. Nuamah, Loïs Openda and Malick Fofana troubled Sparta with pace, one-on-one ability and off-the-ball movement, a combination that Lyon will try to unleash on the counter whenever Fenerbahçe commit numbers forward.
With Denayer and Diomandé both unavailable, Fonseca will have to improvise in central defence. That creates a clear danger area around the edge of the box, where Talisca has been timing his runs to perfection. The Brazilian’s knack for arriving late to meet cutbacks and second balls could be decisive, especially if Lyon are forced to defend deep for long periods. Fenerbahçe will also look to exploit set-pieces, an area where Talisca’s aerial threat can punish any uncertainty in the visiting defence.
At the other end, Lyon’s rapid transitions will test Fenerbahçe’s discipline. Kanté and Guendouzi must shield the back four to prevent Nuamah and Fofana from isolating defenders one-against-one. Kartal has repeatedly stressed the importance of organisation, and his team will need that clarity to avoid leaving space for Openda’s runs in behind.
The second leg takes place at Groupama Stadium in Lyon on 26 August. Whichever side prevails over the two legs will enter the Champions League league phase and secure a guaranteed base payment of €18.62 million.
