Brighton will again be without winger Yankuba Minteh, who missed the first leg amid a rejected approach from Liverpool. Midfielder Carlos Baleba remains sidelined by an ankle injury while Manchester United continue to pursue him, and Kaoru Mitoma is a doubt. Forward Stefanos Tzimas is also unlikely to start.
Fabian Hurzeler handed competitive debuts to record signing Luka Vuskovic, Ibrahim Osman, Zadok Yohanna and Amario Cozier-Duberry in the Arctic Circle. New striker Promise David could be involved from the bench after his summer move, while Pascal Struijk and Michael Svoboda provide defensive options. Tromso’s first-choice goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard produced two sharp saves to deny Georginio Rutter and Osman in the first leg, and the Norwegian side have no fresh injury concerns.
Brighton controlled the away leg with 25 attempts on goal but could not break down Tromso. Rutter saw an early effort saved, Osman had a back-post chance blocked and penalty appeals for a challenge on Osman by Isak Dahlqvist were waved away. Tromso almost snatched victory on the counter: Heine Asen Larsen forced Bart Verbruggen into a vital one-on-one save, and full-back Isak Vadebu wasted a clear opening late on. The 0-0 draw leaves the tie on a knife-edge.
Tromso, who sit third in Norway’s Eliteserien, dropped into the Conference League after Europa League elimination and carry a dangerous transition game. Their intense press unsettled Brighton at Romssa Arena, with Troy Nyhammer and Lars Olden Larsen providing pace on the break. The club have lost three of their four games against English opposition but did win a two-legged tie previously – a warning Brighton cannot ignore.
Brighton’s best route to a breakthrough may run through Rutter, who was kept out by Haugaard’s reflexes in Norway. The French forward led the line throughout pre-season and will again be the focal point in Hurzeler’s attack. Haugaard, a Dane familiar to English audiences from a loan spell at Wigan, was the hero of the first leg and will need to be beaten if the Seagulls are to secure group-stage football.
Hurzeler admitted his side were too sluggish on the ball and demanded a much tighter defensive response to counter-attacks. The return fixture comes after Brighton’s Premier League opener at home to Aston Villa, testing squad depth before the Conference League decider. With the tie goalless, Brighton need a sharp turnaround from domestic exertions to seal their place in the group stage.
