Middlesbrough vs West Brom

Middlesbrough host West Bromwich Albion at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, 29 August 2026, in a Championship regular-season contest that pits two opening-day winners against each other. The 12:30pm kick-off will be broadcast live on ITV1, Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football, giving a national audience a look at two sides aiming to sustain early momentum.

Team News and Injury Latest

Kim Hellberg confirmed that midfielder Aidan Morris "is much better" and "will absolutely participate in the game" after missing the 2-1 win over Lincoln City. David Strelec has returned to training and could make the bench if he comes through the final session, though Hellberg is not rushing the forward back. New centre-back signing Ashley Phillips will have to wait for his debut; the former Tottenham man is not in the selection frame as the coaching staff build him up away from the main group. There was no fresh injury concern flagged for West Brom in the available reports, leaving Tony Mowbray with a settled squad from their 2-1 victory last time out.

Boro took three points on the opening day with a 2-1 home win against Lincoln City, a match that required them to find goals without the injured Morris and Strelec. Hellberg rang the changes for the midweek trip to Blackburn Rovers, and the availability of his two returning stars should add depth to a squad still trying to find its rhythm under his management. The early Championship table has them level on points with West Brom and six other sides, making this a chance to establish a foothold inside the top positions before the international break.

West Brom also started the campaign with a 2-1 scoreline, beating Burnley at The Hawthorns on 22 August. Harry Whitwell levelled the match inside the opening 20 minutes with a composed finish from the left side of the box, and the Baggies went on to secure the win. The trip to Teesside represents a step up in opposition on the road and a chance for Mowbray’s side to show they can replicate their home sharpness away from the West Midlands.

Key Battle: Returning Boro Creativity vs Steady Baggies Core

With Morris dictating play in midfield, Hellberg’s side should have more control through the centre against a West Brom unit that was breached once at Burnley. Whitwell is the danger man for the visitors—his ice-cold equaliser at The Hawthorns underlined a growing influence—and Boro’s back line will have to track runners arriving late into the area. How Strelec is used, even from the bench, could swing the late stages given Boro’s need for a cutting edge in the final third during their Lincoln win.

West Brom face Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night, while Middlesbrough return to Championship action the same evening, giving both managers plenty to consider as a demanding sequence of early-season fixtures unfolds.
