1. FC Nürnberg vs Dynamo Dresden

1. FC Nürnberg host Dynamo Dresden in the 2026/27 2. Bundesliga season opener on Sunday, 9 August, but their preparations have been dealt a blow with summer signing Rayan Ghrieb facing a race to be fit.

Team News and Injury Latest

Nürnberg confirmed on 28 July that Ghrieb sustained a minor muscle tear in his thigh during the 2‑2 friendly against Palermo last Saturday. The 27‑year‑old French midfielder only arrived from 1. FC Magdeburg this summer and had been expected to feature prominently in the opening weeks. Medical staff are assessing the injury, and a decision on his availability will be made closer to kick‑off. No other injury concerns have been reported for Der Club. Dynamo Dresden are expected to name a full‑strength squad, with no fresh absentees flagged ahead of the trip.

Pre‑Season Form

Ghrieb’s injury occurred in a lively encounter with Palermo that saw Nürnberg twice pegged back. The Bavarian side also faced a mixed friendly programme, but the only confirmed result is the 2‑2 draw. Dresden, meanwhile, head into the league opener on the back of an impressive 2‑1 comeback victory over Bundesliga side Union Berlin at the Rudolf‑Harbig‑Stadion. Tom Rothe gave Union the lead before second‑half goals from Niklas Hauptmann and Vincent Vermeij turned the friendly on its head, giving Dresden a confidence‑boosting win.

Key Battle: Filling the Creative Void

If Ghrieb is ruled out, Nürnberg’s head coach will lose a player capable of unlocking defences from midfield—a role the club specifically targeted when they signed him from a direct 2. Bundesliga rival. The reshuffle could see an additional defensive-midfield shield or a redeployment of wider forwards to compensate. Dresden’s own attacking threat is likely to flow through Vermeij, whose physical presence and late runs caused Union Berlin problems, and Hauptmann, who provided the equaliser in that friendly. How Nürnberg’s reshuffled unit copes with Dresden’s direct approach will shape the contest.

What’s at Stake

The opening day of the 2. Bundesliga often sets an early tone for a 34‑game marathon. Nürnberg have publicly stated ambitions to push for a top‑three finish, while Dresden’s scalp of a Bundesliga side suggests they will not be content merely to survive. A fast start in front of their own supporters would ease the pressure on the hosts, but Dresden’s recent momentum makes them a dangerous opening‑day opponent.

The final whistle will do little to decide the season, yet both camps know a victory this weekend can provide a psychological platform for the weeks ahead.
