SpVgg Greuther Fürth vs Heidenheim: Hosts chase first win
Published
SpVgg Greuther Fürth welcome 1. FC Heidenheim in a 2. Bundesliga Matchday 4 encounter on Sunday, 6 September 2026. The hosts are still searching for their first league win of the season, sitting 17th with one point from two matches, while Heidenheim arrive with three points and a goal difference of -2 after an eventful start.
Team News and Injury Latest
No major injury concerns have been reported for either side heading into the weekend. Fürth bolstered their squad with the loan signing of 18-year-old right midfielder Mika Wallentowitz from Schalke 04, a move that could give Heiko Vogel’s side fresh energy on the flank. Heidenheim, meanwhile, lost experienced goalkeeper Kevin Müller to Schalke during the transfer window, but Frank Schmidt’s squad has otherwise remained intact and will look to build on the attacking verve that delivered a 4-3 away win at Osnabrück on the opening day.
Greuther Fürth Form Guide
The Cloverleaves have endured a torrid start to the campaign. They fell 2-4 at home to 1. FC Nürnberg on 15 August, then were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal by VfL Bochum 1848 (1-2) a week later. Across their last five competitive fixtures, Fürth have managed just one draw and four defeats, conceding 11 goals in that stretch. The defence has been a particular concern, with five goals shipped in the league alone, leaving the side rooted in the bottom third.
Heidenheim Form Guide
Heidenheim’s opening two matches have been a study in extremes. They began with a 4-3 victory at VfL Osnabrück on 8 August, showcasing the attacking threat that has become a hallmark under long-serving coach Frank Schmidt. The follow-up, however, saw them fall to a heavy defeat — the 7 goals conceded in just two games is the joint-most in the division. Attacking verve and defensive fragility are both on display, making them one of the more unpredictable sides in the early table.
Key Battle: Fürth’s Attack vs Heidenheim’s Leaky Defence
While Fürth have struggled to find a cutting edge, the visit of a Heidenheim side that has already conceded seven times offers a clear opportunity. Vogel’s men will need to exploit the space behind a visiting backline that has looked vulnerable in transition. Conversely, Heidenheim’s own forward line, buoyed by that four-goal haul at Osnabrück, will fancy its chances against a Fürth defence that has yet to keep a clean sheet in the league. The contest could be decided by which attack capitalises on the opposition’s defensive lapses.
A first win for Fürth would lift them out of the early relegation conversation, while three points for Heidenheim could push them into the top half of a tightly packed table. Both managers know the importance of building momentum before the season’s rhythm takes hold.
