Qarabag vs Dynamo Kyiv: Conference League decider in Baku
Published
Qarabag host Dynamo Kyiv at their Tofiq Bəhramov adına Respublika stadionu home on Thursday 13 August in the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League third qualifying round tie, trailing 1-0 from the first meeting in Lublin.
Team News and Injury Latest
Dynamo Kyiv are without left-back Kostiantyn Vivcharenko, who suffered a knee injury in the Europa League clash with Cluj, and centre-back Denys Popov, ruled out until October after knee surgery. Andriy Yarmolenko is expected to start, according to former Dynamo defender Vitaliy Lysytskyi. Qarabag will miss Swedish striker Zakaria Savo for up to eight weeks with a partial tear in his right thigh muscle, picked up in the second leg against CSKA Sofia. Head coach Gurban Gurbanov admitted some players have not returned to full training after that 120-minute exertions and that not everyone is ready for the full 90 minutes. Midfielder Cebrails Makreckis is suspended after his late red card in the first leg.
Qarabag Form Guide
Qarabag have yet to score in four European qualifiers this season. Two goalless draws with CSKA Sofia were followed by a penalty shootout exit, and they then lost 1-0 to Dynamo in the first leg. Their defensive record had been excellent until that narrow defeat, but Gurbanov’s side now need at least one goal – and probably two – to keep their Conference League campaign alive.
Dynamo Kyiv Form Guide
Dynamo were beaten 5-2 on aggregate by PAOK in Europa League qualifying, dropping into the Conference League. Since then, they produced a disciplined defensive display to edge Qarabag 1-0 in the first leg, ending a run in which they had failed to score as the nominal home side only once since November 2025. A clean sheet in Baku would be enough to secure a place in the playoff round.
The Aggregate Situation
Without the away goals rule, a one-goal Qarabag victory would force extra time and potentially penalties. A two-goal home win would send the Azerbaijani side through in normal time. If Dynamo find the net, the hosts would need three to progress – a scenario that will shape the tactical approach of both coaches.
The winner of this tie will advance to the Conference League playoff round, moving one step closer to the group stage.
