Gornik Zabrze vs Monaco: Pogba injury blow ahead of playoff
Published
Gornik Zabrze meet AS Monaco in the first leg of the 2026/27 UEFA Europa Conference League playoff round on Thursday, 20 August, at their 31,871-capacity Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla home in Zabrze. The Polish vice-champions are fighting for a place in the group stage against a Monaco side that is making its European return under new head coach Filipe Luís — but will be without several key figures.
Team News and Injury Latest
Monaco will travel to Poland without midfielder Mamadou Coulibaly, who is suspended after his red card in last season’s Champions League play-off against Paris Saint-Germain. An even bigger blow is the absence of Paul Pogba: the 33-year-old broke down with a thigh injury during a training camp at St George’s Park and has been told his contract will be terminated. Medical scans are still pending, but the Frenchman will play no part in Zabrze.
Górnik Zabrze have no reported injuries or suspensions. In their last outing — a 1-1 draw at home to Ferencváros that saw them drop out of the Europa League qualifiers — manager Jan Urban fielded a 4-3-3 built around goalkeeper Philipp Schulze, centre-backs Rafał Janicki and Josema, and captain Erik Janža at left-back. Kacper Urbański, who converted a penalty just before half-time in that tie, is set to start again in midfield.
Górnik Zabrze’s Route to the Playoff
Zabrze’s European campaign began in the Europa League third qualifying round, where they faced Hungarian champions Ferencváros. A 1-0 defeat in Budapest was followed by a 1-1 stalemate at home, Urbański’s spot-kick briefly levelling the aggregate score before the visitors held on to advance. Relegated to the Conference League pathway, the Polish side now face an even sterner test in the shape of Monaco, but they carry the confidence of a fully-fit squad and the backing of a sold-out Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla.
Monaco’s Competitive Drought and Luís’s Debut
Monaco have not played a competitive European fixture since their dramatic Champions League exit to PSG in August last year. That tie ended in a 3-2 away loss and a 2-2 home draw, a night that also saw Coulibaly sent off. Since then, Filipe Luís has taken over at the Stade Louis II, and the former Atlético Madrid and Chelsea defender will be making his senior managerial bow on Thursday. The Brazilian has spoken of his desire to reintegrate Pogba, but the midfielder’s latest injury setback has thrown those plans into disarray. With Coulibaly also missing, Luís must reshape a midfield that was already light on European experience.
Key Battle: Wide Threats vs. a Reshuffled Monaco
Taofeek Ismaheel and Yvan Ikia Dimi offer genuine pace on the flanks for Zabrze, and they will look to expose a Monaco defence that has had limited time to gel under a new coach. With Pogba and Coulibaly absent, Monaco’s spine lacks its most experienced ball-winners, putting pressure on the remaining midfielders to shield the back four. If the home side can feed Erik Prekop in the box and get their wingers running at the full-backs, they could unsettle a visiting team that has played only pre-season friendlies so far.
Zabrze must take something to the Stade Louis II for the return leg a week later if they are to have any hope of reaching the league phase. For Monaco, a first-leg result on Polish soil would go a long way to ending the club’s year-long wait for competitive European football.
