The Greek Super League returned with a bang this weekend and the heavyweights wasted no time flexing their muscle. AEK Athens and PAOK both thumped promoted opposition 4-0, while Olympiakos did just enough to grind past Atromitos. The surprise came in Agrinio, where Panetolikos ripped up the script to stun Asteras Tripolis 3-1. Across the six completed fixtures our model found the match result perfectly well — five of its six calls on the winner landed — but the fine margins of goals markets and exact scorelines proved a much tougher riddle.
How our forecasts did
The scoreboard shows a round of two halves. The model’s straight match result and win-or-draw calls each returned five correct from six attempts, so the broad direction of the games was read nicely. First team to score landed in four of the six contests, while both teams to score and half-time/full-time each hit three.
The trouble lay in the goals totals and the exact scorelines. Our total goals forecasts managed only two successes, and not one of the six exact scoreline calls came in — a firm reminder that early-season sharpness in those categories is hard to come by.
Saturday
AEK Athens FC 4-0 Iraklis 1908 AEK Athens bulldozed newly promoted Iraklis in the season’s curtain-raiser. Our model was firm on a home win and on AEK scoring first, both of which were fulfilled. However, the call for fewer than 2.5 goals was blown away as the hosts racked up four. The exact scoreline pick of 1-0 was also wide of the mark, but the half-time/full-time forecast of AEK leading at the break and going on to win was spot on.
Kalamata 2-3 Aris Thessalonikis The tightest contest of the round on paper turned into the liveliest. The model gave Aris the win — correctly — and backed that up with a win-or-draw call that also landed. Everything else missed. The call of fewer than 2.5 goals was the first to go, followed by the forecast that at least one side would be kept off the scoresheet and that Aris would net first. Kalamata scored the opener and both sides found the net in a match that exploded past the low-scoring script our model had expected.
Olympiakos Piraeus 1-0 Atromitos Olympiakos got the job done without the fireworks the model anticipated. A high-confidence home win call came in, as did the forecast that the Piraeus side would open the scoring and keep a clean sheet. But the low-confidence call for more than 2.5 goals fell short — a solitary strike was all it took — and the half-time/full-time pick of Olympiakos leading at the interval was also wrong, with the deadlock not broken until later.
Sunday
OFI 2-0 Volos NFC OFI made home advantage count, delivering the win our model expected. The total goals forecast came off — a low-confidence under 2.5 call that looked nervous until the final whistle — and OFI scoring first was another tick. The only black mark was the both-teams-to-score forecast, which backed goals at both ends but fell to a clean sheet.
Panathinaikos P-P Kifisia The Athens derby was postponed and no forecasts were issued.
PAOK 4-0 Levadiakos PAOK produced a display every bit as emphatic as AEK’s. Our high-confidence match result and first-team-to-score calls were home comfortably, and the low-confidence over 2.5 goals call landed as PAOK passed that mark with ease. The forecast that at least one side would be kept off the scoresheet also held. Only the exact scoreline — a cautious 1-0 — missed, while the half-time/full-time call of PAOK ahead at the break and winning was correct.
Panetolikos 3-1 Asteras Tripolis The round’s big upset. Our model saw this as an away-day for Asteras, backing them to win, open the scoring and lead at half-time and full-time. None of that materialised. Panetolikos rattled in three, the match breezed past 2.5 goals, and both sides scored. It was a clean sweep of seven incorrect calls on this fixture.
What we got wrong
The Panetolikos result was the biggest miss of the weekend. The model leaned heavily on head-to-head history — Asteras had won on five of their last ten league visits, including a 2-1 victory in May — and read the fixture as an early-season away scalp for a side that has usually handled this trip well. Panetolikos paid no attention to the form book and took the points with room to spare.
The goals markets also caused trouble. At AEK, our model pointed to a cagey pre-season 0-0 draw and forecast a tight 1-0, but Iraklis’s first top-flight outing in years dissolved into a rout. At Kalamata, a match that looked destined for a tense, narrow Aris win delivered five goals and a see-saw contest. Olympiakos, meanwhile, fell the other way: the model called over 2.5 goals and got a single goal in reply. Early-season volatility in goals totals is not unusual, and it bit hard here.
What the round changed
AEK, PAOK and Olympiakos all banked three points in the manner you would expect of title challengers — two of them with the kind of statement scorelines that put down an early marker. The promoted sides learned that the step up is steep, while Panetolikos gave the table an unexpected shape. For our model, it was a round that reaffirmed match result forecasting’s reliability, while underlining that the finer scoring details need a couple of matchweeks to settle.
