Galatasaray held off Göztepe in a five-goal thriller to preserve their perfect start, but the standout story of Süper Lig Matchweek 3 was the trouble our forecasting model found itself in across a chaotic set of fixtures. From nine matches that carried at least one call, the model landed only three match-result forecasts and failed to predict a single exact scoreline, making this one of the roughest rounds of the campaign so far. Even so, the win-or-draw market offered a safety net — eight of those nine calls were correct, underlining that picking a definitive outright winner was the real problem.
How our forecasts did
The scoreboard makes sober reading. Match-result calls went three from nine, correct only on Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş. Total goals and both-teams-to-score fared even worse, each returning just two correct calls. The exact-scoreline column was blank — nine graded, none right. First team to score provided some respectability at four from nine, while the half-time/full-time double managed only two. The one bright spot was the win-or-draw market, where the model correctly steered away from a losing side in eight of nine attempts. The high-confidence calls, usually the model’s bedrock, were particularly damaging: Gençlerbirliği and Başakşehir both failed to win as firm favourites, dragging the overall tally down.
Results
Gençlerbirliği S.K. 1-1 Erzurumspor FK
The model gave Gençlerbirliği a high-confidence home win against a side that had conceded seven goals without reply across the opening two weekends. The hosts started on top but could not shake Erzurumspor, who earned their first point of the season. The call for fewer than 2.5 goals landed, but the match-result and both-teams-to-score forecasts both missed.
Konyaspor 1-2 Kocaelispor
This was a clean sweep of incorrect calls. The model had Konyaspor to win, to score first, and for the game to stay under 2.5 goals — instead, the home side fell to a third straight defeat and Kocaelispor grabbed all three points. The prediction of a tight, low-event contest, rooted in both teams’ blunt early form, was swept aside.
Galatasaray 3-2 Göztepe
The round’s headline fixture delivered for the hosts but not entirely for the model. A high-confidence Galatasaray win, more than 2.5 goals, and both teams to score all landed, but the forecast that the hosts would open the scoring was wrong — Göztepe struck first before Galatasaray rallied. The exact-scoreline call of 2-1 and the half-time/full-time prediction both missed.
Gaziantep FK 1-2 Rizespor
The model leaned heavily on a draw, pointing to Gaziantep’s steady start and the suspension of top scorer Juninho Bacuna. Instead, Rizespor took the points in a match that broke the under-2.5-goals and both-teams-to-score calls. Only the cautious win-or-draw tip for the visitors proved correct.
Eyüpspor 2-1 Alanyaspor
Another draw call that came unstuck. Eyüpspor, searching for their first points, eventually found them, but not before Alanyaspor scored first as forecast. The model correctly flagged the visitors to break the deadlock with medium confidence, but the remaining calls — under 2.5 goals, at least one side kept scoreless, and the half-time/full-time — all went the wrong way.
Başakşehir 1-1 Kasımpaşa
A high-confidence home win bit the dust at the Fatih Terim Stadium. The model had Başakşehir to win, to open the scoring (which they did), and to record a 2-0 victory. Kasımpaşa’s equaliser wrecked the match-result, total-goals, both-teams-to-score and exact-scoreline forecasts, leaving only the cautious win-or-draw and first-team-to-score calls intact.
Samsunspor 0-2 Fenerbahçe
Injury-hit Fenerbahçe delivered a professional away win, vindicating the low-confidence match-result call. The model expected a winner either way and got it, while the half-time/full-time prediction also landed. However, the forecasts of more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score missed, as Samsunspor drew a blank and the visitors kept a clean sheet.
Amed 2-1 Trabzonspor
Amed’s energetic start earned them a home victory, upending the call for a Trabzonspor win. The model correctly picked both teams to score and Trabzonspor to score first, but the exact scoreline (0-1) and total goals (under 2.5) were wrong. The cautious win-or-draw call, which anticipated a winner either way, was correct.
Beşiktaş 6-2 Çorum FK
The most lopsided result of the weekend made a mockery of the model’s medium-confidence call for fewer than 2.5 goals and at least one side being kept off the scoresheet. Beşiktaş won as expected, scored first, and were ahead at the break — all correct — but the goal avalanche was far beyond what the numbers, which highlighted sturdy home defending, had suggested.
What we got wrong
The three highest-confidence match-result calls all misfired in the same round. Gençlerbirliği were backed heavily at home against a side that had yet to score, yet could only manage a 1-1 draw after failing to convert dominance into a second goal. Başakşehir, whose recent home record had been built on barely conceding, let Kasımpaşa score in a 1-1 stalemate that stripped the model of a second high-confidence winner. And while Galatasaray did win, the manner of it — conceding first, leaking two at home — chipped away at the supporting forecasts.
The Konyaspor-Kocaelispor fixture was a perfect storm of missed assumptions. The model saw two blunt attacks and predicted a low-scoring home win; instead, both sides found the net and Kocaelispor took the three points. Similarly, the Beşiktaş goal calls were completely undone by a six-goal home blitz that contradicted every signal the model had read about a fortress-like defence. Across the round, the model’s reading of defensive solidity repeatedly failed to hold up against the reality of open, eventful matches.
What the round changed
Galatasaray’s perfect start keeps them at the summit, but the chasing pack sensed blood elsewhere. Beşiktaş’s scoring power was laid bare, and Fenerbahçe’s ability to win on the road without key forwards and their first-choice goalkeeper was a statement of depth. At the other end, Gençlerbirliği’s stumble and Konyaspor’s continued misery tightened the early clusters. For the model, Matchweek 3 was a sharp reminder that Süper Lig contests are rarely as tidy as the form guide suggests — and that a near-perfect win-or-draw record is cold comfort when the definitive calls keep going wrong.
