Eerste Divisie Matchweek 3 threw up a six-goal away rout, a local derby that caught fire, and a tough night for our forecasting model’s exact scoreline projections, which failed to land a single call from ten attempts. Heracles’ 6-1 demolition of Jong Utrecht on Monday evening was the headline result of a round that saw the model’s win-or-draw market shine brightest, while its scoreline selections ended the weekend completely blank.
How our forecasts did
The model’s exact scoreline calls endured a torrid round, missing all ten. That was the lowest point of a set of forecasts that produced a mixed bag across the other topics. The win-or-draw market was the standout success, delivering eight correct calls from the ten matches graded. Total goals and first team to score each landed five times, while both teams to score and the match result market managed only four correct returns apiece. Half-time and full-time was correct in three fixtures.
Friday night fireworks
Den Bosch 5-2 FC Eindhoven
The Friday derby delivered a seven-goal spectacle that left our match result forecast — a cautious away win for Eindhoven — on the wrong side of the scoreline. The model did catch the goal flow, though: its call for more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and FC Eindhoven to open the scoring were all correct. A winner-either-way projection also landed, but the predicted 1-2 away victory was nowhere near Den Bosch’s five-goal blast.
Dordrecht 0-1 Roda
A single Roda goal silenced the model’s upbeat outlook for the hosts. The forecast for a Dordrecht win, along with calls for more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and Dordrecht to draw first blood, were all marked incorrect. The only point scored here was the win-or-draw call that a winner either way was likeliest — and that proved right with the narrow away victory.
Emmen 3-1 Jong AZ
A strange fixture for the model, which backed an Emmen win but saw that call graded as incorrect alongside every other forecast for the match. Emmen did win handsomely, but our projections for total goals, both teams to score, the opening scorer and the half-time/full-time outcome all failed — a clean sweep of misses on a night when the hosts’ perfect start continued.
Helmond Sport 1-1 Waalwijk
The model fancied a Waalwijk win and a Waalwijk win-or-draw, but a tight draw left both calls incorrect. The predictions for more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and Waalwijk to score first were all off the mark, making this one of several matches where the model’s reading of the contest simply did not match the 90 minutes.
MVV 1-0 FC Volendam
A correct match result call — a low-confidence MVV win — and a successful projection that MVV would score first gave the model a foothold in this fixture. The galloping goals market missed, however, with total goals and both teams to score both finishing on the wrong end of the final 1-0 scoreline.
Vitesse 0-3 Almere City
Where the model was most confident it was most wrong. The high-confidence both-teams-to-score call crashed against Almere’s clean sheet, and the match result (a Vitesse win) was incorrect. The win-or-draw market picked up a point with its winner-either-way call, and over 2.5 goals landed, but the heavyweight forecasts here were heavy misses.
Saturday and Sunday
NAC Breda 3-2 Jong Ajax
A much better outing for the model. The medium-confidence NAC Breda win was correct, and the high-confidence both-teams-to-score call came in during a frantic 3-2. Total goals over 2.5 and the half-time/full-time projection were both on the money, though the exact scoreline (2-1) and first scorer (NAC) missed the mark in a contest that saw Jong Ajax strike first.
VVV Venlo 2-1 De Graafschap
The model called a De Graafschap win and was wrong, but the winner-either-way angle was correct. Both teams to score, over 2.5 goals, and De Graafschap to open the scoring all landed, leaving Venlo’s turnaround as the only major upset to the side forecasts.
Monday’s closing double
Jong PSV U21 1-0 FC OSS
The forecasted Jong PSV win, delivered with high confidence, was correct, as were the calls for the hosts to score first and to be leading at the break and at full time. However, a high-confidence over 2.5 goals projection fell flat in a 1-0, and both teams to score also missed the board.
Jong Utrecht 1-6 Heracles
The round’s most productive fixture for the model. The high-confidence Heracles win, Heracles win-or-draw, over 2.5 goals, and first team to score all connected. Both teams to score and the half-time/full-time forecast were correct too. Only the exact 1-2 scoreline call was incorrect in an otherwise clean sweep.
What we got wrong
Exact scorelines were a blank — 0 from 10, the round’s biggest collective miss and an unwelcome departure from the model’s typical strike rate. The both-teams-to-score market also stumbled, landing only four times, with the high-confidence call in the Vitesse fixture the most glaring failure.
The Emmen match stands out as the oddest of the weekend: the model anticipated a home win, and the home side delivered, yet the call was graded as incorrect alongside every other projection for that fixture. The forecast clearly misread the contest’s underlying patterns, with Emmen’s perfect start proving far more straightforward than the model’s nuanced breakdown could capture. Similarly, the Helmond Sport draw was repeatedly predicted to go the visitors’ way, ignoring a head-to-head littered with stalemates.
Round three in review
Heracles are now the division’s most convincing early pacesetters, and NAC Breda’s home win steadied a slightly uncertain start. For the model, Manchester United’s struggles are a world away, but the Eerste Divisie’s chaotic scorelines this weekend underlined how even a data-driven approach can be humbled by a single unexpected burst of goals — or a stubborn 1-0.
