New York City FC vs Nashville SC

New York City FC host Nashville SC in a Major League Soccer Matchday 23 fixture on Friday, September 4, 2026, as the Eastern Conference leaders look to tighten their grip on the Supporters’ Shield race. The two sides met earlier this season, with Nashville claiming a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Jeisson Palacios and Maxwell Woledzi.

Team News and Injury Latest

New York City FC are dealing with a major availability crisis. Eight first-team players are ruled out with lower-body injuries: Drew Baiera, Arnau Farnós, Talles Magno, Alonso Martínez, Maxi Moralez, Aiden O’Neill, Kai Trewin, and Hannes Wolf. The sheer volume of absentees leaves head coach Nick Cushing with limited options, particularly in defence and midfield.

Nashville SC’s injury list is far shorter. Chris Applewhite and Warren Madrigal will miss the trip through lower-body issues, but the squad otherwise travels at close to full strength. Sam Surridge, who has scored 13 goals this campaign, is expected to lead the line again.

Nashville SC Form Guide

The Boys in Gold sit atop the Eastern Conference with 49 points from 21 matches (15-4-2). A 4-0 drubbing of FC Cincinnati last time out extended their record-breaking start, making them the best 22-match regular-season side in MLS history (16-2-4). Nashville have won four of their last five, and their only defeat in that spell came away at Inter Miami. The team’s balance between defensive solidity and attacking firepower has been unmatched; they have scored 43 goals while conceding just 17.

New York City FC’s Rocky Road

Seventh-placed NYCFC enter the contest on 27 points from 21 games (7-6-8) and are in danger of slipping out of the playoff picture. Their recent form reads D-L-L-D-W, with the most recent result a 1-1 draw away to the New England Revolution on August 23. The attacking output has been respectable with 35 goals scored, but conceding 30 has often undone promising positions. The injury pile-up threatens to make defensive organization even harder to maintain against the league’s most efficient attack.

Key Battle: Sam Surridge vs NYCFC’s Makeshift Backline

With multiple defenders unavailable, New York City will have to field an unfamiliar defensive unit. That puts a direct spotlight on Sam Surridge, Nashville’s leading scorer, whose movement and finishing have tormented opponents all season. The English forward netted in the reverse fixture and will look to exploit any hesitation in a backline that has had little time to gel. How NYCFC manage his threat, particularly on the counter, could decide whether they take anything from the game.

Nashville begin a three-match road swing with this contest, and a positive result would strengthen their hold on the conference summit. For New York City, halting the slide is essential to keep pace in a congested Eastern Conference playoff race.
