Coventry vs Brighton: Azeez Out as Lampard's Sky Blues Seek
Published
Coventry City welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, with the newly-promoted Sky Blues still searching for their first points of the season in Matchweek 4.
Team News and Injury Latest
Frank Lampard has a near-full squad to choose from, with Frank Onyeka back after missing the defeat to Hull City. Ethan Pinnock could make his full debut at centre-back alongside Aurèle Amenda, though Bobby Thomas is expected to be fit after cramp forced him off last time out. New forward Sidiki Cherif is building match fitness and may feature from the bench, while Brandon Thomas-Asante, Gustavo Hamer and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto are pushing for starts after featuring as substitutes. Haji Wright (thigh), Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Luke Woolfenden remain sidelined.
Brighton will be without deadline-day signing Femi Azeez, who has been ruled out with a slight injury. Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh and Jack Hinshelwood are still some way off returning, but Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari are in contention. Mats Wieffer went off injured in the previous league outing, though the international break may give him a chance of recovering in time. Maxim De Cuyper, who has been operating as an advanced left winger, is expected to continue in that attacking role.
Coventry's Slow Start
The Sky Blues are yet to pick up a point after three matches, sitting 17th following a 1-0 loss at Hull. Despite that, Lampard has the core of a side that romped to the Championship title with 95 points last term. Carl Rushworth is the established goalkeeper behind a settled back four of Milan van Ewijk, Amenda, Thomas and Jay Dasilva. In midfield, Matt Grimes and Caleb Yirenkyi have been tasked with protecting a fluent front four. Taiwo Awoniyi leads the line, supported by Loum Tchaouna, Jack Rudoni and Ephron Mason-Clark. The 4-2-3-1 shape has been consistent, but the step up in quality has exposed defensive vulnerabilities that Lampard will be desperate to address.
Brighton's Attacking Threat
Fabian Hürzeler’s side have made an enterprising start to the campaign, with Pascal Gross pulling the strings from deep and Diego Gómez offering a creative spark further forward. De Cuyper’s position on the left flank gives Brighton an overload in wide areas, while Malick Yalcouyé’s energy in midfield makes them difficult to contain. Bart Verbruggen has provided reliability in goal. Even with several wide forwards missing, the Seagulls have enough firepower to trouble a Coventry defence that has yet to keep a clean sheet.
Key Battle: De Cuyper vs Van Ewijk
Maxim De Cuyper’s deployment as a left-sided attacker means Coventry right-back Milan van Ewijk will be tested throughout. De Cuyper’s deliveries and willingness to shoot from distance add a direct goal threat, while Van Ewijk will need to balance his defensive duties with providing an outlet going forward. If the Dutch wing-back can pin De Cuyper deeper, Coventry’s chances of containing Brighton’s most dangerous outlet improve significantly.
Coventry then face a trip to Newcastle United, while Brighton host Hull City, fixtures that could shape the early direction of both clubs’ campaigns.
