Rayo Vallecano vs Racing Santander: La Liga Preview Amid
Updated
Rayo Vallecano and Racing Santander meet in La Liga on Saturday, September 5, in a match still waiting for a confirmed venue. Rayo’s request to stage the fixture at Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Pérez was rejected by the Azulones, leaving the club scrambling for a home ground days before kick-off.
Team News and Injury Latest
Racing Santander will be without midfielders Pedro Felipe and Giorgi Guliashvili, both sidelined with injuries. The pair missed the 3-2 win over Elche and are not expected to return for this trip. Rayo Vallecano have reported no fresh fitness concerns following their visit to Barcelona, though manager Iñigo Pérez may rotate after a demanding start to the campaign.
Racing Santander’s Form: Zabiri’s Hat-Trick Sparks Revival
José Alberto López’s side collected their first win of the season in dramatic fashion on August 28, overcoming Elche 3-2 at El Sardinero. Striker Zabiri stole the show with a first-half hat-trick, scoring in the 15th, 21st and 36th minutes to put Racing 3-0 up before a nervy second half. The result followed a 1-0 defeat at Getafe and an opening-day 2-2 draw with Villarreal, leaving Racing with four points from three matches. Defensive numbers remain a concern — they have conceded in every game — but Zabiri’s red-hot form gives them a genuine cutting edge.
Rayo Vallecano Seek First Win After Tough Barcelona Test
Rayo are still searching for their first victory of the La Liga season. A 1-1 home draw with Alavés and a narrow defeat in their opening fixtures left them with a single point, before they travelled to face a Barcelona side that had won four of their last five across all competitions. The outcome of that Camp Nou clash is still fresh, but Rayo’s attacking output — just two goals in two matches before the Barcelona game — needs to improve if they are to climb from the lower reaches of the table.
Key Battle: Rayo’s Defence vs. Zabiri’s Hot Streak
Zabiri’s three-goal display against Elche announced him as Racing’s main threat. The forward’s movement inside the box and ability to finish first-time will test a Rayo backline that has yet to keep a clean sheet this season. If Rayo cannot track his runs from deep, the visitors will carry a constant danger on the counter-attack. Conversely, Racing’s own defensive fragility — highlighted by conceding twice in six second-half minutes against Elche — could give Rayo’s forwards the openings they have been craving.
The Venue Saga: How a Stadium Dispute Adds to the Drama
According to Cadena SER and Diario AS, Rayo Vallecano asked to use Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Pérez for this fixture, only for Getafe to refuse La Liga’s mediation. The rejection leaves the match without a confirmed stadium, adding an unusual layer of uncertainty to the build-up. Rayo have been exploring alternative venues, but the lack of a settled home has become a recurring theme in the early weeks of the season, potentially affecting the squad’s preparation.
Rayo will hope to resolve the venue issue quickly, with a demanding trip to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid on September 12 looming. Racing, meanwhile, head to Barcelona in their next outing, making every point in this unsettled encounter precious.
