Bayer Leverkusen vs Union Berlin

Bayer Leverkusen host Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon, 5 September 2026, in the second round of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season. Carles Martínez’s side fell to a disappointing opening-day defeat at promoted Elversberg and will be eager to secure a first win. Union Berlin, disrupted by injuries, began with a 1-1 home draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Team News and Injury Latest

Leverkusen are without Eliesse Ben Seghir (hamstring) and Montrell Culbreath (foot), both confirmed absent. Otherwise Martínez has a full squad to choose from.

Union Berlin’s injury list is more severe. Goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow (thigh) is a doubt, while striker Andrej Ilić (illness), centre-back Marvin Friedrich, winger Robert Skov and forward Oliver Burke (Achilles) are not expected back until later matchweeks. Stanley N’Soki (calf) is out until mid-September, and defender Andrik Markgraf is a long-term absentee after an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Josip Juranovic, who provided two assists on matchday one, is fit to start.

Bayer Leverkusen’s New Era Under Martínez

Martínez arrived with a reputation for high-tempo, attacking football. Pre-season brought emphatic wins over Trabzonspor, Genk, Sevilla and Newcastle United, but also a jarring 7-0 loss to Brentford and a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. The opener at Elversberg exposed defensive frailties. Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane both found the net in that game, and their continued sharpness is critical. Midfielder Ibrahim Maza, who registered an assist in the DFB-Pokal win over Wehen Wiesbaden, adds creativity.

Union Berlin’s Sturdy but Stretched Squad

Union’s draw with Frankfurt showcased their defensive organisation. Tim Skarke, Leopold Querfeld and Emmanuel Latte Lath each scored on matchday one, demonstrating a spread of goal threat. Michel Aebischer’s four fouls underlined a combative midfield approach. Should Rønnow miss out, Matheo Raab is likely to deputise in goal.

Key Battle: Midfield Physicality and Wide Delivery

Juranovic’s two assists from right-back highlight Union’s threat from wide areas, while Leverkusen’s Maza and Lucas Vázquez will look to dictate centrally. Aebischer and Maza are the most foul-heavy players so far – their duel promises to be a fiercely contested engine-room battle.

A first home win would settle Leverkusen’s nerves before a trip to Augsburg next week, while Union Berlin will aim to extend their unbeaten start despite a depleted squad.
