Olympiakos Piraeus vs Atromitos

Olympiakos Piraeus begin their Super League 1 title defence on 22 August 2026 as they welcome Atromitos for the opening round of the new campaign. The match marks the first competitive action for both sides in the 2026/27 season, with the serial Greek champions aiming to set an early pace against a side that finished in the bottom half last term.

Olympiakos Piraeus: Title Defence Begins

Under José Luis Mendilibar, Olympiakos secured their 48th league crown last season and showed European pedigree by reaching the UEFA Conference League final. The Piraeus club’s summer recruitment has strengthened an already deep squad, though no major departures have disrupted the spine that delivered domestic dominance – a front line built around creative wingers and a prolific centre-forward, complemented by a physical midfield that suffocates opponents. The opening fixture at their usual home ground offers a chance to make a statement: Olympiakos lost only once at home in the league in 2025/26 and will expect to extend that form.

Atromitos: Searching for an Opening-Day Statement

Atromitos have historically struggled against the Piraeus giants, recording only a handful of victories in the last two decades. Their summer business has focused on adding depth to a squad that relied heavily on counter-attacking and set-piece threat last season. New arrivals in wide areas could give the Peristeri side the pace to stretch Olympiakos on the break, but manager Chris Coleman faces a tall order to organise a defence that conceded heavily away from home during the previous campaign. The absence of a confirmed stadium relocation means this is likely to be played at Olympiakos’s regular home, where the atmosphere is notoriously difficult for visitors.

Head-to-Head and Recent Meetings

The fixture has been overwhelmingly one-sided in recent years: Olympiakos have won 19 of the last 22 meetings in all competitions, with Atromitos’s solitary away win in Piraeus dating back to 2012. Last season’s corresponding league fixture ended in a comfortable home victory, with Olympiakos scoring three times without reply. The opening round context may inject some uncertainty, but history suggests the champions will dominate possession and territory.

Key Battle: Midfield Control

The contest will likely be decided in the centre of the park. Olympiakos’s midfield pivot, built on a player capable of dictating tempo and breaking lines, will look to starve Atromitos’s counter-attacking triggers. The visitors’ best chance lies in pressing high and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas – a tactic that frustrated Olympiakos briefly in cup ties last year. If Atromitos can disrupt the rhythm, the opening half could be tighter than raw statistics imply.

The first whistle is set for the evening of 22 August. For Olympiakos, three points would lay down an early marker; for Atromitos, even a draw would represent a useful building block before their home opener the following week.
