St. Truiden vs Omonia Nicosia

Belgian side St. Truiden host Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off tie on 20 August 2026. With a place in the competition proper at stake, both clubs enter the two-legged fixture looking to secure a crucial advantage. The return leg is scheduled for a week later in Nicosia.

Team News and Injury Latest

St. Truiden manager Henning Berg is expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 system. Goalkeeper Léo Kokubo is set to start, shielded by a back four featuring Loïc Mbe Soh, Visar Musliu, and Joedrick Pupe. In midfield, Abdoulaye Sissako and Robert-Jan Vanwesemael are likely to form the double pivot, with attacking support provided by Ilias Sebaoui and Ryan Merlen.

For Omonia Nicosia, the attacking threat is likely to come through forwards Panagiotis Andreou and Loïs Diony, both of whom have found the net during the early stages of the campaign. Midfielder Muamer Tankovic, who has registered an assist already this season, will be the creative fulcrum in the visitors' setup.

Form Guide and Recent Results

St. Truiden have been in strong form across all competitions, winning six of their last ten matches while losing just two. The Belgian outfit navigated their way through the previous qualifying round and arrive at the play-off stage with genuine momentum.

Omonia Nicosia's recent competitive action saw them involved in a 1-1 draw against Lincoln Red Imps. The Cypriot side have shown resilience in their qualifying campaign and will be looking to carry that defensive solidity into the away leg in Belgium.

Key Battle: Merlen vs Tankovic

The creative duel between St. Truiden's Ryan Merlen and Omonia's Muamer Tankovic could define the tie. Merlen's ability to drift inside from wide areas and link play in the final third will test Omonia's defensive discipline. Conversely, Tankovic's vision and delivery from set pieces make him the visitors' most likely source of a crucial away goal. Whichever playmaker exerts the greater influence is likely to tilt the first leg in their team's favour.

What a Play-off Place Means

The winners of this two-legged tie will progress to the UEFA Europa League group stage for the 2026/27 season. For St. Truiden, a place among the continent's second-tier competition represents a significant achievement for a club of their stature. Omonia Nicosia, regulars in European qualification, are aiming to re-establish themselves on the group-stage scene after falling short in recent campaigns.

The second leg takes place on 27 August at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, where the aggregate scoreline will determine which team secures a coveted Europa League berth.
