Matchweek 15 of the Championship delivered an afternoon of wild scorelines and unexpected upsets, headlined by Cardiff edging Burnley 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller while bottom-placed Preston stunned promotion-chasing Southampton. Across the twelve fixtures, our forecasting model enjoyed a solid showing on totals and coverage calls but found the outright match results and exact scores much harder to read.
How our forecasts did
Exact scoreline calls suffered the worst weekend of all, with zero of the twelve projections landing across the round. Half-time and full-time calls also struggled badly, managing only two correct calls from twelve. Outright match results proved split down the middle, where six of the twelve match result calls landed as several heavy away favourites stumbled.
On the other hand, broader calls performed far better. Win or draw projections led the way alongside total goals, with nine of the twelve calls landing in each category. Both teams to score also returned a strong showing, producing eight correct outcomes from twelve fixtures. First team to score forecasts finished level, with six of the twelve calls hitting their mark.
Results
Friday 6 November
Derby 3-1 Bolton Derby halted their winless home run with a positive attacking display, scoring three times after conceding first. Our call for a Derby win landed alongside more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score, though Bolton opening the scoring ruined the first team to score and half-time forecasts.
Saturday 7 November
Bristol City 0-5 Norwich Philippe Clement's Norwich produced an emphatic attacking display at Ashton Gate, sweeping aside a Bristol City team managed by Michael Skubala. Our projection for an away win, Norwich to lead at half-time and full-time, and more than 2.5 goals all landed smoothly, even if the home side failed to contribute to the scoreline.
Portsmouth 1-2 Stoke City Mark Robins saw his Stoke City side take all three points from Fratton Park despite Portsmouth opening the scoring. Our call for a home victory missed, but our projection for both teams to score landed as Stoke overturned the early deficit.
Wrexham 1-1 Wolves César Peixoto's Wolves took the lead but could not hold on against Wrexham, who fought back for a point at the Racecourse Ground. That denied our call for an away win, though calls for both teams to score, fewer than 2.5 goals, and Wolves scoring first were all correct.
Birmingham 2-1 Swansea Chris Davies kept Birmingham's unbeaten home record intact with a well-earned victory over Swansea. Our medium-confidence call for a Birmingham win landed, as did our forecast for the home side to score first and lead at both half-time and full-time.
Blackburn 2-1 West Ham Scott Parker's West Ham suffered their first away defeat of the league campaign at Ewood Park as Blackburn struck twice. Our forecast for an away win was undone, though calls for more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score landed as projected.
Cardiff 5-4 Burnley In the highest-scoring encounter of the round, Cardiff overcame Fabio Celestini's Burnley in an astonishing nine-goal contest in the capital. Our call for a Cardiff victory landed alongside more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score, even if the defensive collapse on both sides defied tidy scoreline forecasting.
Charlton 2-1 Sheffield Utd Nathan Jones's Charlton ended a ten-game winless run across all competitions by frustrating Sheffield United at The Valley. Our projection for an away victory missed the mark, though the call for more than 2.5 goals and both teams finding the net delivered.
Preston 1-0 Southampton Bottom-of-the-table Preston produced the shock of the round as Graham Alexander's side kept their first clean sheet of the season to down Tonda Eckert's Southampton. Our medium-confidence call for an away win misread the contest entirely, resulting in misses across total goals and both teams to score.
QPR 2-1 Lincoln Julien Stéphan's QPR continued their strong home metrics by overcoming Tom Shaw's Lincoln. Our calls for a QPR win, QPR to score first, more than 2.5 goals, and both teams to score all proved correct.
Watford 0-0 Middlesbrough League leaders Middlesbrough arrived at Vicarage Road with thirty goals to their name under Kim Hellberg, but they were held to a scoreless stalemate by Watford. Our firm, high-confidence call for an away victory and goals at both ends fell flat against an unexpectedly resolute Watford defence.
West Brom 3-0 Millwall James Morrison extended West Brom's unbeaten run to six league games with a comprehensive defeat of Alex Neil's Millwall. Our calls for a home win, West Brom scoring first, and more than 2.5 goals landed comfortably, though Millwall's blank denied both teams to score.
What we got wrong
The clearest blind spots for the model came in fixtures involving high-flying favourites on the road. The most glaring miss occurred at Deepdale, where bottom-placed Preston hosted Southampton. Southampton entered the weekend unbeaten in six matches and faced a home defence that had conceded in every previous outing this season. Instead, Preston held firm for a 1-0 victory, turning aside our projections for an away win and goals at both ends.
A similar breakdown occurred at Vicarage Road. Middlesbrough possessed the most prolific attack in the division under Kim Hellberg, which led our model to place high confidence on an away victory and Middlesbrough opening the scoring. Watford offered no space, resulting in a 0-0 draw that broke every attacking forecast for the fixture. Factoring in West Ham's defeat at Blackburn, the round demonstrated how quickly division form lines can unravel when travelling sides fail to establish early control.
Where the round leaves the table
Matchweek 15 delivered an abrasive reality check for several promotion contenders, with Middlesbrough, Southampton, and West Ham all dropping points away from home. At the opposite end of the division, unexpected victories for Preston, Charlton, and Derby tightened the relegation scrap, ensuring that defensive fragility remains the defining variable across the Championship autumn schedule.
