The 2. Bundesliga served a generous portion of chaos in Matchweek3, and our model was left with plenty of explaining to do. The headline was written at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, where VfL Bochum lost1-0 at home to a VfL Osnabrück side that had conceded seven goals in its opening two defeats.
How our forecasts did
The round turned ugly for the granular calls. Only one of the nine exact scoreline forecasts landed, and the half-time and full-time market fared identically poorly with a single correct outcome. Total goals also disappointed, with three of the nine calls graded correctly. The both-teams-to-score topic delivered four correct answers. At the other end of the scale, the match-result call split the round evenly with five correct, while the win-or-draw topic proved the session’s steadiest performer, returning six correct outcomes from nine graded forecasts. The model’s confidence was most bruised by events in Bochum, where all seven published forecasts for that fixture missed, including a medium-confidence call for the home side to win.
Results
VfL Bochum0-1 VfL Osnabrück — The round’s biggest upset and the model’s worst fixture. Every call missed: the home win, the under2.5 goals projection, the both-teams-to-score call, and even the cautious win-or-draw safety net all fell apart. The model had read Osnabrück’s defensive frailty as a clear opportunity for Bochum; the visitors instead kept their first clean sheet.
Eintracht Braunschweig3-5 Hertha BSC — A football match broke out. The model saw a tight Hertha victory with few goals and at least one side kept quiet; instead we got eight goals and both nets bulging repeatedly. The low-confidence away-win call landed, but everything else missed, including a firm call for Hertha to score first — Braunschweig struck the opener.
Energie Cottbus3-4 SpVgg Greuther Fürth — A seven-goal thriller that the model partly caught. The medium-confidence calls for more than2.5 goals and both teams to score both landed, and Cottbus did score first as forecast. The home-win call was wrong, however, and the model’s caution about Cottbus being outshone on expected goals proved prescient.
1. FC Heidenheim5-3 Dynamo Dresden — Heidenheim’s defensive problems continued but their attack fired again. The home win, over2.5 goals, and both-teams-to-score all landed. The first-scorer call missed — Dresden scored first — and the exact scoreline was a long way from the predicted2-1.
Karlsruher SC2-5 VfL Wolfsburg — The model leant towards a tight Karlsruhe win and got a Wolfsburg rout. The low-confidence call that the match would produce a winner either way landed, and Karlsruhe did score first, but the under2.5-goals and clean-sheet projections were blown apart by seven goals.
1. FC Nürnberg4-1 Arminia Bielefeld — The model’s best fixture of the round. The medium-confidence home-win call landed, over2.5 goals hit, both-teams-to-score returned, Nürnberg scored first, and the half-time-and-full-time call of Nürnberg leading at the break and winning also came in. Only the2-1 exact scoreline was off, by a margin.
SV Darmstadt980-1 Hannover96 — A rare bright spot among the specific calls: the low-confidence0-1 exact scoreline landed perfectly, as did the away win and the call for Hannover to score first. The over2.5-goals and both-teams-to-score calls missed on a tight afternoon.
1. FC Magdeburg2-0 Holstein Kiel — Magdeburg bounced back from their6-1 humiliation with a clean win. The home-win call and the first-scorer projection both landed, but the both-teams-to-score and over2.5-goals calls missed. The model had read Kiel’s road-scoring record as a reason both would find the net; Magdeburg’s defence had other ideas.
FC St. Pauli1-2 1. FC Kaiserslautern — Kaiserslautern finally conceded — and scored — after180 goalless minutes. The model backed St. Pauli and got stung: the home-win call, the win-or-draw safety net, the under2.5-goals projection, and the first-scorer call all missed. Both-teams-to-score landed at low confidence, but it was a rare point of light in a difficult fixture.
What we got wrong: Bochum’s no-show
The model walked into a trap in Bochum. The analysis gave a clear rationale — Osnabrück had shipped seven in two defeats and looked defensively frail away from home — and the forecasts reflected a belief that Bochum’s modest attack would still find enough. A medium-confidence home win, a1-0 exact scoreline, and five other calls all pointed the same way. Osnabrück scored early in the second half and held on. The model had no read on a visiting defence that chose this weekend to tighten up, and it cost the round.
The Braunschweig-Hertha goal glut was another blind spot. The model saw a controlled Hertha side with two clean-sheet wins facing a Braunschweig team yet to score at home, and forecast a grim1-0 away victory. Instead, the two sides produced eight goals — including three in the opening20 minutes — and the under2.5-goals call was buried long before half-time.
What the round changed
Nürnberg made it three wins from three and look the early pace-setter, while Bochum’s and St. Pauli’s winless starts deepened. Kaiserslautern finally found the net and a result, Wolfsburg’s five-goal burst announced them properly, and the bottom of the table already has a desperate feel after just three matchweeks. The model heads into Matchweek4 with some repair work to do on its defensive reads.
