Liga Profesional Argentina’s Clausura Matchweek 7 delivered a series of stumbles for the division’s supposed heavyweights, with Independiente humbled 3-0 at home by Gimnasia M. and Talleres Cordoba held to a goalless draw by Central Cordoba de Santiago. Across 15 fixtures, our model called nine of the 15 match results correctly, but a handful of high-confidence misses exposed the danger of trusting home favourites on a weekend when the script was torn up.
How our forecasts did
The scoreboard was a mix of steady returns and sharp reversals. Match results hit nine of 15, but the tallies for first team to score (seven), half-time and full-time (five) and exact scoreline (four) showed how often the detail eluded the model this round. Both teams to score matched the match-result figure at nine correct, but high-confidence calls in that topic were punished by several games where both sides found the net. The glaring weakness was in high-confidence home wins: four of the seven firmest match-result calls failed.
Results
Union Santa Fe 4-1 Sarmiento Junin – Union Santa Fe ran riot, making good on the model’s firm home-win call and landing the forecasts for both teams to score, over 2.5 goals and a first-half lead.
Boca Juniors 1-0 Lanus – Boca ground out a 1-0 victory that matched every medium-confidence forecast, including the exact scoreline and a clean sheet for Lanus.
Deportivo Riestra 1-1 Velez Sarsfield – The draw was correctly called, but high-confidence both-teams-to-score and Velez-first-scorer forecasts fell when both sides traded goals.
Rosario Central 1-2 Gimnasia L.P. – Gimnasia’s upset wrecked a high-confidence home win and the under-2.5 goals and both-teams-to-score calls in a match that suddenly sparked into life.
Huracan 1-1 Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto – Another high-confidence home win went begging; the hosts did score first and the total stayed under 2.5, but the draw stung several other calls.
Atletico Tucuman 0-0 Belgrano Cordoba – A predictable stalemate; every forecast bar the first scorer was correct, including the low-confidence exact scoreline.
Talleres Cordoba 0-0 Central Cordoba de Santiago – Talleres failed to break down a toothless opponent, punishing high-confidence win and first-scorer forecasts.
Banfield 2-3 River Plate – River’s low-confidence win came through, but a goal-fest demolished the high-confidence under-2.5 and clean-sheet calls.
Argentinos JRS 2-1 Aldosivi – The high-confidence home win landed, yet both teams scored and the match overshot the total-goals forecast.
Independiente 0-3 Gimnasia M. – The round’s shock result. A high-confidence win forecast turned into a rout as every call except both teams to score failed.
Independ. Rivadavia 3-1 Racing Club – The medium-confidence home win came good, both teams scored and over 2.5 goals hit, though the first-scorer forecast missed.
Defensa Y Justicia 1-0 Platense – A low-confidence home win proved accurate, but the both-teams-to-score call fell with Platense blanked.
Estudiantes L.P. 0-0 Newells Old Boys – Group leaders Estudiantes were held; a high-confidence home win missed completely, though the under-2.5 and clean-sheet calls were safe.
Instituto Cordoba 1-0 San Lorenzo – Instituto stretched their winning run with a textbook 1-0, hitting every forecast except the half-time and full-time combination.
Tigre 0-0 Barracas Central – A lifeless draw denied a medium-confidence Tigre win but kept the total under 2.5 and ensured at least one clean sheet.
Where the model stumbled: high-confidence home wins evaporate
The model entered the round leaning heavily on home fortresses. Independiente had lost just once in eight at home and were conceding under a goal per game; Talleres Cordoba, though in a slump, were facing a Central Cordoba side that had managed a single away goal all season; Estudiantes boasted 11 clean sheets in 16 games and sat top of the group. The data pointed firmly toward home victories – yet all three of those high-confidence match-result calls failed, with Independiente shipping three, Talleres firing blanks and Estudiantes unable to find a way past Newell’s. Huracan and Rosario Central added to the misery, each a high-confidence home win that ended in a draw and a defeat respectively. The analysis that served the model well in other fixtures – Union’s strong home shape, Argentinos’ fortress record – simply could not account for the collective off-day that struck so many hosts at once.
The round leaves the Clausura race tighter than before, with Independiente, Talleres and Estudiantes all dropping points unexpectedly and the title picture now thick with contenders.
