Matchweek 2 of La Liga delivered a statement 5-0 win for Barcelona at Elche, a stunning 3-1 Sevilla victory at San Mamés, and several results that rattled our forecasting model. The model landed four of its nine match-result calls, but the win-or-draw safety net proved far more reliable, nailing eight of nine. Beyond that, however, it was a difficult weekend for several of our firmest projections.
How our forecasts did
The safest topic was clearly win or draw, where eight of nine calls proved correct. That was the high point. Elsewhere, the round was unforgiving. Match result went four from nine, and first team to score managed five from nine — a narrowly winning record. Total goals split evenly at four right, five wrong. But the real damage was done in the both teams to score and exact scoreline calls. Both teams to score went just one from nine, while exact scoreline failed to land a single correct call. Half-time and full-time also struggled, getting only two from nine right.
In short, the model’s cautious, safety-first calls held up, while the more specific forecasts — particularly around goal events and full-time scorelines — came unstuck across the round.
Thursday’s result
Rayo Vallecano 1-1 Alaves
The round opened with a tight draw at Vallecas. No forecasts were issued for this fixture, so our record remains untouched by it.
Friday’s result
Real Betis 1-0 Real Sociedad
Our model leaned firmly towards Betis and was rewarded with a home win and a Betis opener — both medium-confidence calls that landed. The 1-0 scoreline, however, sank the calls for over 2.5 goals and for both teams to score, while the exact scoreline (2-1) and the half-time/full-time prediction both missed. A solid result call that couldn’t carry the supporting projections.
Saturday’s results
Athletic Club 1-3 Sevilla
This was the round’s biggest miss. The model backed an Athletic win with medium confidence and built every subsidiary forecast around that — win or draw, under 2.5 goals, at least one side kept scoreless, Athletic to score first, a 2-1 home win, and a level half-time with full-time shared — and every single one failed. Sevilla’s three-goal salvo at San Mamés shredded a projection built on recent head-to-head goal trends. Our analysis had noted that the last two meetings produced goals, but the model’s call placed too much weight on Athletic’s home record and not enough on Sevilla’s ability to unpick it so emphatically.
Valencia 0-0 Celta Vigo
A cautious call for a Valencia win missed, but the model’s low-confidence win-or-draw safety net and under-2.5-goals call both came in. The expectation of both teams scoring and of Valencia grabbing the opener was undone by a goalless draw. The half-time/full-time call for a Valencia-led win also fell flat.
Espanyol 1-2 Real Madrid
The high-confidence Real Madrid win and first-team-to-score calls both landed, as did the over-2.5-goals projection. However, the model’s call for at least one side to be kept off the scoresheet was wrong — Espanyol scored — and the exact scoreline (0-1) and half-time/full-time (Madrid ahead at both) missed by a whisker. Madrid began their season with a win, but not as cleanly as the model forecast.
Sunday’s results
Atletico Madrid 2-2 Villarreal
Another high-confidence match-result call went awry. The model was firmly behind an Atletico Madrid win, built on Simeone’s defensive control and the contrast with Villarreal’s leaky opening-day display. Atletico did score first — that part held — but a 2-2 draw broke the calls for a home win, under 2.5 goals, and at least one clean sheet. The win-or-draw call saved some face, but the high-confidence miss stings.
Getafe 1-0 Racing Santander
A low-confidence Getafe win came in, and the model also correctly called Getafe to score first. The goals-based projections failed, though: more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score were wrong as a single goal settled it. The half-time/full-time call for a level break and shared points was also off.
Elche 0-5 Barcelona
The model’s highest-confidence calls of the round delivered handsomely. A Barcelona win, win or draw, over 2.5 goals, first team to score, and even the half-time/full-time forecast all landed. The only blemish was the both-teams-to-score call — Elche were kept silent — and the exact scoreline (1-2) couldn’t match the avalanche. Our analysis had highlighted Elche’s encouraging opening-day performance and wondered whether an unfamiliar Barça midfield might be troubled, but the reality was a commanding away display.
Monday’s results
Osasuna 0-0 Levante
The medium-confidence call for an Osasuna win missed, but the low-confidence win-or-draw, under-2.5-goals, and at-least-one-clean-sheet forecasts all hit the mark. The half-time/full-time call for level at the break and the points shared was one of only two correct in that category all weekend. The first-team-to-score call — Osasuna — failed, as the match stayed goalless.
Malaga 1-1 Deportivo La Coruna
The round ended with another missed medium-confidence match-result call. A Malaga win was the call, but win or draw weathered the draw, and under 2.5 goals proved correct. Both teams to score was wrong — both sides found the net — while the half-time/full-time call of level at the break and a Malaga win couldn’t survive the equaliser. Deportivo’s resilience matched their recent record, while Malaga’s injury list perhaps limited their threat.
What we got wrong: Athletic and Atletico
The weekend’s most jarring misses came in the two standout upsets. At San Mamés, the model went zero-for-seven on Athletic Club versus Sevilla. Our analysis pointed to recent goal-filled head-to-heads and both teams scoring in four of the last five, yet the published call backed a controlled Athletic win with under 2.5 goals and a clean sheet somewhere. Sevilla’s 3-1 rout exposed a disconnect between the historical data and the on-field reality. Similarly, Atletico Madrid’s high-confidence match-result call was undone by a Villarreal side that found two goals where the model expected Atletico’s defensive structure to hold firm. The opening-day xG numbers had painted Atletico as miserly and Villarreal as generous; the pitch told a different story.
Across the round, the model’s tendency to underestimate the volatility of early-season encounters — with new fitness levels, unfamiliar line-ups, and shifting cohesion — was evident.
What changed
Barcelona’s five-star display sent a warning that the defending champions are already in gear, while Sevilla’s win at San Mamés and Villarreal’s point at the Metropolitano scrambled the early top-four picture. After two rounds, only Barcelona boast a perfect record, and the chasing pack is already clustered tightly. For our model, it was a week of sobering calibration — the cautious hedges held, but the precise calls failed more often than they succeeded, and the memory will linger.
