The Ligue 1 season opened with a jolt as Paris Saint-Germain, forecast with high confidence to beat Rennes, were held to a 2-2 draw at Roazhon Park. Elsewhere, Marseille laid down the weekend’s most emphatic marker by dismantling Strasbourg 4-0, and newly promoted Le Mans salvaged a point against Brest. Our model’s forecasts ran into a round where only the “win or draw” market delivered consistently; elsewhere, a series of low-scoring stalemates tripped up several calls.
How our forecasts did
The round’s strongest topic was win or draw, where eight of the nine graded forecasts landed. Match result was more modest, with four correct from nine, while half-time and full-time and first team to score both returned five correct. The two markets that struggled most were both teams to score and total goals, with only three of nine correct apiece. Exact scoreline — always the toughest call — found just one correct from nine, that one a pinpoint Le Havre 0-1 Monaco.
Results
Marseille 4-0 Strasbourg
The season started with a blast at the Vélodrome. Our call for a Marseille win landed, as did the forecast for more than 2.5 goals and Marseille to score first. The low-confidence both teams to score call missed, with Strasbourg blanked, and the exact scoreline prediction of 2-1 was blown away.
Lens 5-2 Auxerre
A Lens win was forecast and duly delivered, and the home side scored first as expected. The total goals call for fewer than 2.5 was emphatically wrong, though the both teams to score call landed in the high-scoring affair. The cautious exact scoreline punt of Lens 1-0 was quickly obsolete.
Le Mans 2-2 Stade Brestois 29
Our low-confidence match result call for a Brest win missed as the newly promoted hosts fought back for a draw. The win or draw call for Brest was correct, but the medium-confidence forecast for fewer than 2.5 goals was scuppered by four goals. Both teams to score was also missed, as the call was for at least one side to be kept quiet.
Nice 0-0 Lorient
This one was a clean sweep of missed forecasts. The model had a Nice win, more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and Nice to score first — none of which materialized. The seven forecasts all turned out incorrect, making it the round’s toughest match for our model.
Toulouse 0-2 Lyon
Another match where the result call was overturned. The model leaned towards a Toulouse win based on recent head-to-heads and Lyon’s defensive absences, but Lyon kept a clean sheet. The win or draw call for a winner either way was correct, but the total goals, both teams to score, and first team to score forecasts all missed as Lyon controlled the game.
Estac Troyes 0-0 Paris FC
A battle of two promoted sides produced a stalemate. Our model forecast a Paris FC win and both teams to score, but neither side found the net. All seven attempts were incorrect, including the call that a winner either way was most likely.
Angers 0-2 Lille
A clean-sheet away win for Lille was very much in line with the model’s thinking. All but the exact scoreline call landed: the match result, win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, at least one side to be kept off the scoresheet, and Lille to score first were all correct. The only narrow miss was the 0-1 exact scoreline.
Le Havre 0-1 Monaco
The only fixture where our exact scoreline forecast hit. A Monaco win was correctly called, as was Monaco to score first, and the half-time and full-time prediction. The total goals call for more than 2.5 and the both teams to score forecast both missed in a tight contest.
Rennes 2-2 Paris Saint Germain
The headline upset. Our high-confidence call for a PSG win was wrong; Rennes took the lead and twice pegged back the champions. The win or draw, total goals over 2.5, and both teams to score forecasts all landed, but the firm first team to score call for PSG and the exact scoreline of 0-2 missed. This was the round’s biggest individual forecast miss given the confidence attached.
What we got wrong
The round’s most jarring miss was the high-confidence PSG victory call. The model read a strong head-to-head record, a fully stocked squad, and a superior quality gap as enough to deliver a routine away win. Instead, Rennes matched them stride for stride, and the draw immediately reshapes the early title picture. Equally damaging were the cluster of goalless or low-scoring draws — Nice 0-0 Lorient, Estac Troyes 0-0 Paris FC — where the model had forecast goals and a winning side. Those contests wrecked the both teams to score and total goals tallies, leaving only three correct across nine attempts in each market.
With the opening round done, PSG have already dropped points away to a side expected to push for Europe, while Marseille sit top on goal difference after a statement win. Promoted Le Mans and Paris FC will take heart from hard-earned points, but the early evidence suggests that sides with defensive discipline can punish any over-reliance on favourites, and our model will be recalibrating for a Ligue 1 season that already looks less predictable than expected.
