The 2. Bundesliga season opened with a thunderous away performance on Sunday, Eintracht Braunschweig dismantling 1. FC Magdeburg 6-1, but across the opening nine fixtures the story was one of unpredictability. Our model’s forecasts proved reliable in some areas and badly awry in others, leaving a mixed record that perfectly captured a chaotic first weekend.
How our forecasts did
The win-or-draw calls stood out as the model’s strongest market, with eight of the nine grading correctly. Both teams to score also performed well, landing in seven of the nine matches. The match result column, however, was troublesome: only three of the nine selections were right. First team to score and total goals each returned four correct calls from nine, while half-time and full-time forecasts managed three. The exact scoreline market proved the hardest, with just a single correct prediction across the entire round – and that came in the one fixture where the model got almost everything else right too.
Results
Friday 7 August
VfL Bochum 0-1 Hertha BSC
The model backed a cautious home win and a string of supporting calls, but Hertha BSC left with the points on opening night. The forecast that there would be a winner either way landed, but the match result, both teams to score (medium confidence), total goals over 2.5, first team to score (a goalless match call) and the 2-1 exact scoreline all missed.
Saturday 8 August
SV Darmstadt 98 2-2 Holstein Kiel
Darmstadt were tipped for a narrow win and an early lead, but Kiel fought back to share the points. The model’s win-or-draw call on Darmstadt hit, and both teams to score drifted home, but the match result, total goals under 2.5, and the half-time/full-time sequence all fell flat.
1. FC Heidenheim 4-3 VfL Osnabrück
Heidenheim delivered a thriller. The model’s medium-confidence home win, win-or-draw, both teams to score, first team to score, and half-time/full-time calls all found their mark. The cautious total goals call of under 2.5 was blown away by seven goals, and the exact 1-0 scoreline was nowhere near.
Karlsruher SC 2-1 Arminia Bielefeld
The round’s clean sweep. Every single forecast landed: the low-confidence home win, the call for a winner rather than a draw, over 2.5 goals, both teams to score, Karlsruhe to open the scoring, the exact 2-1 scoreline, and the half-time/full-time sequence. It was the weekend’s only exact scoreline hit.
1. FC Magdeburg 1-6 Eintracht Braunschweig
The shock of the round. The model’s medium-confidence calls on a Magdeburg win and a win-or-draw outcome were emphatically wrong, and the home side to score first also missed. The over 2.5 goals and both teams to score calls did land in a goal-laden game, but the scale of Braunschweig’s victory shredded every match outcome prediction.
VfL Wolfsburg 0-0 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Wolfsburg were expected to stamp their authority at home, but Kaiserslautern held firm in a goalless draw. The model’s call that at least one side would be kept off the scoresheet was correct, and the win-or-draw selection landed, but the medium-confidence home win, total goals over 2.5, and the half-time/full-time progression all failed.
Sunday 9 August
Energie Cottbus 3-1 Hannover 96
The model went with Hannover for the away win, but Cottbus overturned the script with a 3-1 victory. The call for a winner either way was correct, as were the over 2.5 goals and both teams to score selections. However, the match result, first team to score, and the half-time/full-time forecasts all missed the mark.
1. FC Nürnberg 3-0 Dynamo Dresden
Nürnberg justified the model’s cautious home-win call, cruising to a comfortable victory. The win-or-draw, over 2.5 goals, first team to score, and half-time/full-time forecasts all landed. The both teams to score call was the only blemish, as Dresden failed to find the net.
FC St. Pauli 1-1 SpVgg Greuther Fürth
St. Pauli were fancied for a home win but had to settle for a draw. The model got the win-or-draw indication right, along with both teams to score and St. Pauli scoring first. The match result, over 2.5 goals, and the half-time/full-time sequence all turned out wrong.
What we got wrong: Magdeburg mauling and blunt attacks
The biggest miss of the round came at the Avnet Arena, where our medium-confidence calls on Magdeburg to win or at least avoid defeat were torn apart inside 90 minutes. Pre-match analysis had framed the contest as a tight affair that would hinge on which squad had gelled best during the summer. Braunschweig’s answer was brutal, and the margin of victory – six goals away from home – exposed a huge gap between the model’s expectation of a cagey derby and the reality of a blowout.
Elsewhere, the model’s faith in Wolfsburg’s high press and home authority floundered against a Kaiserslautern side that produced a clean sheet, leaving both the match result and the goals forecast in tatters. Bochum’s opening-night defeat to Hertha likewise underlined a weekend where the predicted favourites rarely delivered. The model’s win-or-draw safety net kept it in touch across the board, but the outright winners’ column was a sobering read.
A frantic opening week leaves the 2. Bundesliga with no clear early pattern. Promotion hopefuls Wolfsburg and Hannover both dropped points, while Braunschweig’s statement win and Karlsruhe’s clinical display provided the weekend’s standout moments. The model will need to digest a round where only one fixture entirely matched its script.
