The projections of more than 2.5 goals and at least one side being kept off the scoresheet also landed, albeit the final tally of seven rendered those marks conservative. The exact scoreline call of a 1-2 away win stood no chance, crumbling inside a chaotic first half.
What we got wrong
The only black mark on the scoreboard was the exact scoreline call. The model had this down as a narrow contest, forecasting Casa Pia 1-2 Benfica. The reasoning noted that while Benfica had been explosive going forward, they had also looked fragile at the back, conceding twice in a lively draw against Portimonense on the opening day. Casa Pia, returning home after a narrow defeat, were thought capable of nicking a goal, especially having won this fixture convincingly last season.
None of that materialised. Benfica were utterly ruthless, showing no defensive frailty while tearing Casa Pia apart. It is a reminder that the exact scoreline is the toughest market to grade, and the model's low confidence on this particular call was well placed.
