Charlotte vs DC United: MLS Playoff Push Heats Up in Week 21
Published
Charlotte FC host DC United in a crucial Eastern Conference matchup on Saturday, August 22, with both sides jostling for position as the 2026 Major League Soccer regular season enters its decisive stretch. The Week 21 clash pits Charlotte’s playoff push against a DC United outfit that has proven difficult to beat in recent weeks.
Team News and Injury Latest
Neither side reported fresh injury concerns heading into this matchday. Charlotte will be without the long-term absentees Nimfasha Berchimas, Aron John, and Harry Toffolo, but none of those represent a new selection headache for head coach Dean Smith. The attack will be anchored by Pep Biel, who leads the team with 10 goals and 29 chances created this season, with Archie Goodwin and Ashley Westwood providing support in the final third.
DC United have their own absences to navigate—Lucas Bartlett is suspended, while Jordan Farr and Kye Rowles remain out—but the starting core should be intact. Tai Baribo carries the primary goal threat for the visitors, having scored 12 times from 34 shots this campaign, with Louis Munteanu and Jackson Hopkins expected to join him in the forward areas.
Charlotte Form Guide
Charlotte enter this fixture in encouraging touch, their last five MLS outings reading W-D-W-L-W. That run includes a 3-1 home victory over Columbus Crew on August 16 and a 2-0 away win against the New York Red Bulls in late July. With 25 points from 18 matches, they sit seventh in the Eastern Conference, firmly in the playoff conversation. Biel’s influence has been central to that push—only a handful of players in the league have created more chances from open play.
DC United Form Guide
DC United’s season has been defined by draws. They have shared the points eight times in 18 fixtures, a record that leaves them on 23 points and lodged in mid-table. Their recent sequence—D-D-W-D-D—underscores a side that is hard to put away but has struggled to turn single points into three. A 2-1 win over Toronto FC on July 26 provided a brief spark, yet they have been held in four of their last five, including a high-scoring 4-4 stalemate with Houston.
Key Battle: Pep Biel vs Tai Baribo
The creative nous of Biel against the finishing instinct of Baribo could decide where the points go. Biel has been Charlotte’s most involved attacker, coupling his 10-goal return with a team-high 29 chances carved out. Baribo, meanwhile, has been ruthlessly efficient—12 goals from just 17 shots on target for DC United. Whichever star finds space in and around the penalty area is likely to swing the contest.
What This Means for the Eastern Conference
This is a classic six-pointer in the congested Eastern Conference midfield. Charlotte hold a narrow two-point advantage and could open up meaningful breathing room with a home win. For DC United, a victory on the road would leapfrog them above their hosts and reassert their credentials as a playoff-caliber team after a run of draws that has stalled their upward momentum. With the regular season entering its final phase, margin for error is shrinking on both sides.
