Heart Of Midlothian vs St Johnstone

Heart Of Midlothian welcome ST Johnstone to Tynecastle Park in Edinburgh for a Scottish Premiership Round 4 fixture on 29 August 2026. The hosts are looking to tighten up after a midweek cup tie exposed familiar defensive frailties, while the visitors await international clearance for a new arrival as they seek a first league win of the campaign.

Team News and Injury Latest

Hearts boss will be concerned by the defensive lapses that cost his side in their recent cup outing. Fan reaction highlighted Jordi Altena’s misplaced pass that led directly to the opening goal, and the consensus is that the backline must improve if the Edinburgh side are to challenge on all fronts this season. On a brighter note, forward James Wilson’s sensational strike off the bench has strengthened calls for him to start. Claudio Braga also earned praise for an exceptional individual display that day.

ST Johnstone manager Simo Valakari is still waiting for FIFA to ratify the signing of Bosnian left-back Enes Alic from FK Zeljeznicar, with the player’s former club claiming he remains theirs. Until that is resolved, Matthew Foulds is the only recognised left-back available, meaning Liam Smith – naturally a right-sided defender – has been forced to cover. The uncertainty leaves the Perth side stretched on the flank entering a tough away test.

Hearts Form Guide

While the defensive shortcomings are clear, the attacking unit showed enough in the cup tie to suggest the team is close to clicking. Wilson’s introduction changed the game, and Braga’s all-round contribution underlined his importance to the side. The Jambos will expect to dominate possession at home and must translate that into a clinical edge after letting a winning position slip in their last outing.

Valakari’s squad is still taking shape, and the unresolved left-back situation has been a recurring issue in the early weeks of the season. Foulds has performed admirably but is isolated, and the makeshift solution of using Smith on the opposite side has been tested. With the transfer window closing soon, the Saints will hope to finalise Alic’s move quickly to provide balance. Their away form will need to improve markedly to take anything from Tynecastle.

Key Battle: Wilson vs a Stretched Saints Defence

If Wilson is handed a starting role, his sharp movement and finishing – demonstrated so emphatically with his world-class strike – will test a ST Johnstone backline that has been forced into reshuffles. The uncertainty at left-back could be the area Hearts target, with Braga and the wide players looking to overload Foulds or Smith. For the visitors, weathering the early pressure and frustrating the home crowd will be essential to grinding out a result.

Hearts will aim to make their home advantage count and move up the Premiership table, while St Johnstone will view the next 11 days of the transfer window as critical to reinforcing a squad that is still short of cover in key areas.
