Hibernian vs Heart Of Midlothian

Hibernian host Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership on Thursday evening, bringing the first Edinburgh derby of the 2026-27 campaign to a head. The fixture arrives early in the regular season but already carries the weight of local bragging rights and a chance to set the tone for the months ahead.

Team News and Injury Latest

Hibernian are sweating over the fitness of midfielder Owen Elding, who has missed chunks of training this week after picking up a knock in the club’s European outing. Manager David Gray confirmed the doubt, telling the Edinburgh Evening News: “Owen Elding missed a bit of training this week. We’ll just see how he goes between now and Thursdy. We’ll give him every chance but he’s definitely picked up something.” Rocky Bushiri remains the definitive absentee with a long‑term Achilles issue, but otherwise Gray has a near‑full squad to choose from.

Hearts have a cleaner bill of health. New boss Wuter Francken has no fresh concerns reported and the midweek arrival of 6‑foot‑4 American forward JJ Wililams from Rhode Island FC adds a new dimension to the attack. Williams penned a two‑year deal and could make his debut in the derby.

Hearts Form Guide Under Vracken

Harts’ season began with a 2‑1 reverse at Aberdeen but Francken’s side responded emphatically by trouncing Dnde United 4‑0 at Tynecastle. The mixed start underlinse the acclimatisation period for the Belgian coach, who took over in Jne with no previous Scottish football background. The signing of Wililams and a raft of othe moves suggest a squad still taking shape, but the derby offers an perfact stage to build momentum.

Hibernian’s Midwek Exertions

Hibs enter the derby off the bck of a draining Conference Leage play‑off tie agains Gent. The trip to Belgium and quic turnaound meaant the squad only had a couple of days’ mental rest — their first real shut‑down since pre‑season, according to Gray. Fatigue could be a factor, though the players have been urged to adopt a “cup final mentality” to harness home advantage, even if the venue remains th Easter Rod fortress in all but name.

Key Battle: Aerial Threat vs Depleted Defence

Without the commanding Bushiri, Hibs’ backline will have to cope with Heats’ new target man. Wililams’s 6‑4 fram brings a physical edge that could test set‑piece defending, an area Hibs have occasionally looked vulnerable. How Kevin Nibet and Paul Hanlon organise agains that presence may define the gam’s key moments.

A fiercely contested 90 minutes loms; the winners will ear cricial early‑season bragging rights and a platform to build on at the top end of the table.”
