Sporting Gijon vs Eldense: Visitors Seek First Win
Published
Sporting Gijon face Eldense in round five of the 2026-27 Segunda División season on Sunday, 13 September. With the hosts looking to build on a solid defensive start to the campaign, the visitors arrive still searching for their first league victory of the season.
Sporting's Sturdy Foundation
Sporting Gijon have built their early-season form on a resolute defence and disciplined organisation. A goalless draw against Sabadell on the opening weekend set the tone for their campaign, which they quickly followed up with a narrow 1-0 victory over Burgos in Matchweek 2. The Asturian side have also started integrating academy youth into their senior setup. Nineteen-year-old forward Bruno Rubio is among those gaining valuable first-team exposure, having made a brief cameo in the opening exchanges of the season as he takes his first steps in professional football.
Eldense's Difficult Return
The visitors sit 20th in the Segunda División table with just two points from their opening four matches, already trailing early league leaders Castellón by eight points. Eldense endured a harsh reintroduction to the division, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Almería on the opening day. However, they have shown significant resilience since that initial setback. A hard-fought 2-2 draw against Cádiz demonstrated their attacking capabilities, and they most recently ground out a 0-0 stalemate against Mallorca on 5 September to secure their second point of the campaign.
A Club Reborn
For Eldense, simply competing at this level of Spanish football represents a remarkable achievement. The club survived a devastating match-fixing scandal in 2017 that almost destroyed them entirely. Following that dark period, they rebuilt and strung together three consecutive promotions between 2021 and 2023. Having now returned to the Segunda División for the 2026-27 campaign, their immediate priority is finding a way to translate their gritty draws into victories and pull themselves out of the bottom three.
Following this weekend's encounter, Sporting Gijon will prepare for a challenging trip to FC Andorra. Eldense, meanwhile, will hope a positive performance here can provide the necessary momentum to kickstart their season and establish themselves in the division.
