Matchweek 21 of the Brazilian Serie A delivered a heavily disrupted round of action, capped off by Palmeiras hitting four goals on the road against Vitoria to secure a dominant away win. With three fixtures postponed early in the schedule and only a single match carrying active projections, our forecasting model experienced a remarkably quiet but mixed week, securing four accurate calls from seven graded predictions. Despite the shortened slate of games, the round still offered plenty of talking points, including a five-goal thriller in Rio de Janeiro that defied our expectations of a cautious, low-scoring encounter.
How our forecasts did
With only one fixture carrying active projections this round, the model experienced a brief and divided set of returns. The both teams to score, exact scoreline, and half-time and full-time topics performed worst, as each recorded zero correct calls from one graded attempt. If a topic went badly, it was undoubtedly this trio, which failed to anticipate the frantic nature of the single graded fixture. On the brighter side, the match result, win or draw, total goals, and first team to score topics were the best performers. Each landed their single graded forecast to register one correct call, with the first team to score projection standing out as our most firmly held success of the round.
Results
The round was immediately affected by schedule changes, as three fixtures set to kick off the weekend were called off. The matches between Atletico-MG and RB Bragantino, Chapecoense-sc and Vasco DA Gama, and Sao Paulo and Santos were all postponed, limiting the action across the rest of the matchweek.
When play did get underway, Internacional and Flamengo shared the spoils in a closely fought 1-1 draw. At the same time, Mirassol secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Remo to take all three points in front of their home support.
Later that evening, Fluminense and Bahia played out a 0-0 draw, unable to find a breakthrough despite their efforts. The headline result of the week then came from Vitoria, where the hosts were completely dismantled in a 4-0 defeat by a relentless Palmeiras side.
The following day saw another goalless stalemate, as Corinthians and Atletico Paranaense ground out a 0-0 draw that offered little in the way of attacking inspiration. Shortly after, Coritiba fell to a 1-0 home defeat against Cruzeiro, with the visitors doing just enough to secure the victory.
Finally, in a delayed fixture that rounded off the matchweek's active games, Botafogo triumphed 3-2 over Gremio. Our model correctly predicted a Botafogo win, and accurately called them on the win or draw topic. A firm forecast for Botafogo to score the opening goal proved accurate, while a cautious call for more than 2.5 total goals in the match also landed in what became a high-scoring encounter. However, the unexpected five-goal thriller meant our cautious exact scoreline forecast of a 1-0 Botafogo win was shattered, alongside the expectation that at least one side would be kept off the scoresheet. The half-time and full-time call for Botafogo to lead at the break and win the match also missed the mark.
What we got wrong
The model completely misjudged the openness of the Botafogo and Gremio clash, failing to anticipate the attacking output from both sides. The expectation was a cautious meeting of two out-of-form sides rather than a duel of equals. Going into the match, Botafogo were on a six-match winless run, leaning heavily on home draws to keep their points tally ticking over rather than blowing teams away.
Gremio, meanwhile, were still without an away league win this season and had mustered only six goals on their travels. That specific reasoning drove our incorrect, cautious call that at least one team would fail to score, alongside the exact scoreline prediction of a tight 1-0 home win. Instead, Gremio found their shooting boots on the road, turning a projected tight affair into a five-goal encounter that completely defied the visitors' previous away struggles. The reasoning was sound based on the form book, but the reality on the pitch unfolded in an entirely different manner.
The fragmented nature of Matchweek 21 leaves the Serie A table somewhat distorted, but Palmeiras will be delighted with their emphatic away win to build momentum. Botafogo will also take significant heart from ending their winless run and securing a vital three points, though their defensive frailty in conceding twice suggests there is still work to be done in the weeks ahead.
