Eredivisie Matchweek 5 delivered an avalanche of goals across the Netherlands, headlined by PSV Eindhoven's commanding 3-1 victory over unbeaten rivals Ajax. Our forecasting model had a strong weekend mapping out the general flow of matches, particularly anticipating the high scoring, even if a few late twists foiled its specific scoreline projections.
How our forecasts did
The model's standout performance came on the total goals topic, landing a perfect nine out of nine calls for more than 2.5 goals across a remarkably open weekend of football. Both teams to score was also highly successful, with eight of the nine projections proving correct, alongside seven of nine calls for the first team to score.
The model correctly called the match result in six of the nine fixtures, and found success in seven of nine for the win or draw projections. It found it harder to map out the exact progression of the games, landing three of nine for half-time and full-time, and it failed to hit a single exact scoreline in a round where nets bulged constantly.
Matchweek 5 Results
Friday
Sparta Rotterdam 2-2 PEC Zwolle The model correctly anticipated an open game with both teams scoring and more than 2.5 goals, but its cautious call for a Sparta Rotterdam win was upended by a draw.
Saturday
NEC Nijmegen 1-3 Feyenoord A firm expectation for goals paid off, and our model correctly projected a Feyenoord victory and for the visitors to strike first.
Ajax 1-3 PSV Eindhoven The heavyweight clash went to the visitors, validating our model's cautious call for a PSV Eindhoven win, alongside firm projections for both teams to score, an elevated goal count, and PSV to open the scoring.
Willem II 0-3 Excelsior Willem II's defensive woes continued as Excelsior stormed to a three-goal away win. The model successfully called the Excelsior victory and the goal tally, though it missed on both teams to score.
Sunday
Groningen 2-2 Twente A high-scoring draw matched our expectations for goals and both teams scoring, but the model's call for a Twente win fell short.
Heerenveen 2-3 AZ Alkmaar AZ Alkmaar continued their flying start to the season with another victory, perfectly aligning with our firm projection for an away win and AZ to score first in a goal-heavy game.
Telstar 2-2 Cambuur Two struggling sides shared the points, which meant our cautious call for a Telstar victory missed the mark, though the projection for a high-scoring encounter landed smoothly.
ADO Den Haag 2-3 Fortuna Sittard A narrow away win saw the model correctly project a Fortuna Sittard victory and an open game with both sides finding the net.
Tuesday
Utrecht 3-3 GO Ahead Eagles A six-goal thriller closed the round. Our model impressively picked out a draw as the most likely match result, while correctly calling for Go Ahead Eagles to score first.
What we got wrong
The exact scoreline projections suffered entirely from the sheer volume of goals. In multiple fixtures, teams outperformed the expected tallies.
Where the model missed on match results, it was exclusively caught out by draws. Against PEC Zwolle, the model read that Sparta Rotterdam were searching for a first home win and noted Zwolle's leaky away record and tendency to crumble late, but its cautious projection for a home win was undone by a 2-2 finish.
Similarly, in Telstar's meeting with Cambuur, the model expected the hosts to build on their first win of the season against a Cambuur side that arrived bottom of the table having shipped 16 goals in four games. Instead, the visitors managed to secure a 2-2 draw. In Groningen, the model leaned on Twente's commanding historical record in the fixture and their status as a top-four side, but a resilient Groningen secured a point.
Matchweek 5 will be remembered for its relentless attacking output, with every single fixture delivering at least three goals. As the early Eredivisie table takes shape, PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar have laid down serious markers with impressive away victories, leaving struggling defensive units like Utrecht and Cambuur with plenty of work to do.
