Serie A delivered its first true jolts of the season in Matchweek 2, a round headlined by a pair of stunning results as Fiorentina collapsed at home to Frosinone and newly-promoted Como marched into Naples and took all three points. Those two shocks left a bruise on the site’s forecasts, particularly around the match result and total goals calls, though the model recovered composure across the rest of the fixture list.
How our forecasts did
The model found its footing on straightforward directional calls but stumbled badly whenever it tried to predict the rhythm of a contest. The match result topic was solid at seven out of ten—harmed almost entirely by the two headline upsets—but the round buckled once you asked the model to be more precise. The total goals topic crashed to just four correct calls, and the exact scoreline and half-time/full-time forecasts each returned a dismal three from ten. If the model had a bete noire this weekend, it was the goal count: tight, low-scoring affairs kept being promised in places where the net ended up bulging.
Results
AC Milan 2-0 Venezia Milan coped comfortably enough without the injured Rafael Leão to swat Venezia aside, keeping their perfect head-to-head record intact. The model nailed the match result, both-teams-to-score, and first-scorer calls, and remarkably landed a low-confidence exact scoreline shout of 2-0. Only the half-time/full-time forecast let the fixture down, with the game still goalless at the break.
Fiorentina 0-3 Frosinone A wholly sobering afternoon at the Artemio Franchi. Fiorentina, having lost 4-0 on the opening day, were routed again on home soil by a Frosinone side that had also fired a blank in round one. The model backed Fiorentina to win with medium confidence and to score first with high confidence; both calls were shredded inside a 90-minute display that also swept away the under-2.5 goals and win-or-draw forecasts. Only the both-teams-to-score call survived, thanks to Frosinone’s clean sheet.
Monza 2-3 Udinese A chaotic contest in which the model correctly sniffed out an away win for Udinese and a goal-heavy scoreline, though it misjudged the winner. The low-confidence verdict that a draw was the least likely outcome proved sharp, and the call for both teams to score and Udinese to strike first both landed. Monza, missing Matteo Pessina, simply shipped one too many.
Sassuolo 2-1 Torino Sassuolo’s attacking numbers from matchday one finally translated into points. The model gave them a cautious nod to win and to score first—both correct—and correctly flagged a draw as the outside outcome. It was let down only by expecting a cagey game; three goals meant the under-2.5 goals forecast went awry.
Juventus 2-0 Parma A routine evening for the Old Lady kept the board ticking over. The high-confidence match result call, the clean-sheet expectation, and the first-scorer call all came off without a hitch. The model’s only stumble was the scoreline precision; it had plumped for 1-0 rather than 2-0, and Juventus were not ahead at the interval.
Napoli 1-2 Como The round’s signature upset. The model leaned on three straight head-to-head draws and the solid defensive shapes both sides had shown in the opening week, calling a Napoli win with low confidence and expecting under 2.5 goals. Como ripped the script to pieces, scoring first and eventually taking a 2-1 victory that left every one of the model’s seven forecasts graded as incorrect—a total blank for the algorithm.
Cagliari 0-1 Inter Inter did just enough, riding their weight of history against Cagliari to a one-goal victory. The high-confidence calls for an Inter win and for them to score first both landed, but the model’s belief in an open, high-scoring contest backfired: a single goal meant the over-2.5 and both-teams-to-score calls both missed.
Lazio 1-0 Genoa A textbook Lazio home win, exactly the profile the model expected. Genoa’s toothless away form held, and the forecasts for a Lazio victory, a clean sheet for one side, and under 2.5 goals all clicked. The model even pulled off the low-confidence 1-0 exact scoreline call, though it had that winner coming after the break rather than before it.
Lecce 0-4 AS Roma The final scoreline was far more emphatic than anyone anticipated. Roma’s underlying numbers from matchday one were the reason the model was so firm on an away win and an opening goal for the visitors, but the floodgates opening turned the under-2.5 goals forecast into a heavy miss.
Atalanta 1-0 Bologna Atalanta edged a tight affair in Bergamo, validating the model’s medium-confidence calls for a home win, a clean sheet, and a low-scoring encounter. The 1-0 exact scoreline also landed, though the expectation that the sides would be level at the break prevented a perfect sweep.
What we got wrong: the two black eyes
This round will be remembered for the twin failures in Florence and Naples. The model’s medium-confidence backing of Fiorentina was built on home advantage and a belief that superior individual quality would control a match between two sides who had both failed to score on the opening weekend. It read the contest as a low-event grind, calling for under 2.5 goals and a Fiorentina clean sheet. Frosinone had other ideas, exploiting a Viola defence that has now shipped seven unanswered goals across two matches. The analysis identified Fiorentina as shaky, but the scale of the collapse—and the speed of it—simply wasn’t priced into the calls.
At the Stadio Maradona, the model grabbed hold of history and wouldn’t let go. Three consecutive draws between Napoli and Como, two of them goalless, plus two tidy defensive displays on the opening day, painted a picture of a tight, cagey affair. The call for under 2.5 goals carried medium confidence, and the suggestion of a draw at the interval and full time screamed from every recent data point. Instead, Como scored first and twice, turning the match into a nightmare for every single forecast. When a newly-promoted side overturns a head-to-head record that decisively, the model’s reliance on those patterns becomes a liability rather than a strength.
What the round changed
After 180 minutes, the Serie A table is already throwing out surprises. Juventus and Inter look as advertised—solid, controlled, winning. But Fiorentina are in freefall, Napoli have now lost at home to a newly-promoted side, and Roma’s demolition job at Lecce announced them as a far more dangerous attacking side than many had anticipated. The model heads into Matchweek 3 with bruises to show, but the round was a useful reminder that early-season form can vaporise the moment a team crosses the white line.
