Brazil Serie A Matchweek 27 saw the league's top sides hold their nerve at home, but a string of unexpected away performances left our forecasting model struggling to keep pace. While the title contenders delivered on expectations, the wider round proved difficult to map out.
How our forecasts did
It was a challenging weekend for the model's central projections. The exact scoreline category performed worst, with zero correct calls from ten graded matches, followed closely by the outright match result, where only four of the ten calls landed. Total goals brought six correct forecasts from ten, matching the return for the first team to score category. Both teams to score yielded five correct calls from ten graded matches, while the half-time and full-time specific flow projections were successful just two times out of ten.
Results
Coritiba 3-3 Atletico Paranaense A Paranaense derby missing several key starters turned into a six-goal exchange. We issued a cautious call for an away win, expecting Atletico Paranaense's potent attack to exploit Coritiba's slow starts, but the hosts fought back to share the points.
Atletico-MG 3-1 Fluminense Atletico-MG maintained their formidable home record against a Fluminense side blunted by the absence of top scorer John Kennedy. Our model correctly called for a home win.
Gremio 1-2 Vasco DA Gama Gremio's defensive slide continued at home. Missing Pavon and Amuzu in attack, they surrendered all three points to Vasco DA Gama, overturning our model's expectation of a home victory.
Chapecoense-sc 1-2 Internacional Internacional dragged themselves out of a ten-match winless run, securing an away victory over relegation-threatened Chapecoense-sc. We anticipated a tense basement battle ending in a draw, missing the outcome here.
Palmeiras 2-0 Sao Paulo Despite missing Barboza and Freitas to suspension, second-placed Palmeiras handled a poor travelling Sao Paulo side. A firm forecast for a home win landed comfortably.
Botafogo 1-1 RB Bragantino Botafogo's ongoing struggle for fluency resulted in a draw against an RB Bragantino side missing suspended top scorer Arthur Cabral. We leaned cautiously toward a home win, which proved incorrect.
Santos 2-1 Cruzeiro Missing Neymar and Gabriel Barbosa, Santos were expected to struggle against a Cruzeiro side arriving on a four-match winning streak. Instead, the hosts dug deep for the victory, entirely upending our forecast for an away win.
Mirassol 2-2 Vitoria With Mirassol missing six regular starters and Vitoria dealing with three defensive absentees of their own, this clash ended level. Our projection for a home win missed the mark.
Flamengo 2-1 Corinthians League leaders Flamengo leveraged their dominant Maracanã form to overcome a Corinthians side missing André and Yuri Alberto. The model's firm forecast for a home win was correct.
Bahia 2-1 Remo Bahia pushed their unbeaten run into double digits by dispatching second-bottom Remo, who continue to ship goals on the road. A firm call for a Bahia victory landed exactly as projected.
What we got wrong
The most glaring oversight of the weekend came at Santos. The model fixated heavily on the team news, noting the concurrent absences of Neymar and Gabriel Barbosa, and assumed the hosts' attack would be entirely toothless against a Cruzeiro side bringing a four-match winning run into the fixture. While Cruzeiro's away defending was flagged in the analysis as a potential weakness, the projection leaned too far into the narrative of the missing stars rather than Santos's baseline competence at home.
Likewise, the model's read on Gremio was contradictory. The pre-match analysis correctly identified that Gremio were on a worrying slide, had failed to keep a clean sheet in ten matches, and were missing Pavon and Amuzu. Yet the model still produced a forecast for a home win based on historical venue strength. Vasco DA Gama capitalised on the hosts' very real vulnerabilities, exposing a flaw in how the system weighed historical venue data against immediate structural issues.
With Flamengo and Palmeiras both securing victories, the top of the Serie A table remains rigidly locked. For the teams at the bottom, however, Internacional's sudden revival creates a heavier burden for the likes of Remo and Chapecoense-sc heading into Matchweek 28.
