Matchweek 6 of the 2. Bundesliga campaign brought heavy home scoring and tight stalemates across the division, highlighted by VfL Wolfsburg dispatching SV Darmstadt 98 in an emphatic 5-1 victory. Across the nine fixtures, our forecasting model had an encouraging round on opening scorers and general scoring trends, though low-scoring draws tripped up several match outcome projections.
How our forecasts did
The model struggled most on the total goals calls, where only four of the nine projections landed after several expected high-scoring fixtures produced low-scoring draws. Half-time and full-time calls also saw mixed success, with four of the nine graded calls coming in correctly.
In contrast, the first team to score projections performed best across the round, landing eight of the nine calls. Both teams to score also proved reliable, with seven of the nine calls proving correct as goals arrived at both ends in most fixtures. On the match result calls, five of the nine landed, while six of the nine win or draw forecasts came through. The model also hit two of the nine exact scoreline calls, correctly forecasting 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 Eintracht Braunschweig and Dynamo Dresden 1-2 Hertha BSC.
Results
Friday
SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1-1 1. FC Magdeburg. The visitors struck first to validate our opening scorer call, but the 1-1 draw spoiled our low-confidence call for an away win and our projection for more than 2.5 goals, though both teams to score landed.
VfL Wolfsburg 5-1 SV Darmstadt 98. Wolfsburg took control early to secure our match result and half-time and full-time calls, though Darmstadt's lone reply and the six-goal barrage broke our low-confidence forecast for fewer than 2.5 goals.
Saturday
Holstein Kiel 1-1 VfL Osnabrück. Kiel scored first and both teams found the net as projected, yet the hosts could not secure a victory, missing our match result call while our win or draw call held.
- FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 Eintracht Braunschweig. A clean sweep for the model, correctly projecting the home win, a clean sheet for the hosts, fewer than 2.5 goals, and the exact 1-0 scoreline.
Karlsruher SC 0-1 1. FC Nürnberg. Nürnberg struck first to deliver an away victory and validate our match result projection, though Karlsruhe failing to score scuppered our high-confidence calls for both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals.
Dynamo Dresden 1-2 Hertha BSC. Hertha maintained their winning form in an open encounter, delivering our match result call, both teams to score, over 2.5 goals, and our exact scoreline forecast of 1-2.
Sunday
Arminia Bielefeld 2-2 1. FC Heidenheim. The points were shared in a four-goal contest that delivered our calls for both teams to score, more than 2.5 goals, and the opening scorer, even if Bielefeld could not hold out for the projected home win.
Energie Cottbus 1-1 FC St. Pauli. Cottbus opened the scoring as expected and both sides registered, but the fixture stayed under 2.5 goals, missing our high-confidence call for a higher goal tally and our projection of an away victory.
Hannover 96 2-1 VfL Bochum. Hannover broke out of their recent run of draws to claim victory, rewarding our projections for a home win, both teams to score, and more than 2.5 goals.
What we got wrong
The model's most notable failure came in reading the goal volume in Karlsruher SC 0-1 1. FC Nürnberg. High-confidence calls were placed on both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals because Karlsruhe had conceded nine goals across their previous three home fixtures and Nürnberg arrived averaging three goals per game on the road. Instead, Nürnberg controlled the tempo after an early goal and Karlsruhe could not break through, leaving the match with just one goal.
A similar misread happened in Energie Cottbus 1-1 FC St. Pauli. A high-confidence call on more than 2.5 goals was based on Cottbus seeing every one of their opening five league matches clear that mark. While Cottbus opened the scoring and conceded as anticipated, St. Pauli's compact shape prevented the game from opening up further, leaving the projection one goal short.
Hertha BSC continue to lead the division with an unblemished record, while Nürnberg remain close behind following their away win. At the other end, Darmstadt's heavy defeat leaves them without a point on their travels, and several clubs across the middle of the table remain tied together after another weekend defined by draws.
