Matchweek 7 of the 2. Bundesliga delivered high drama across Germany, headlined by Hertha BSC maintaining their unblemished record with a 2-1 victory over SpVgg Greuther Fürth and a chaotic 4-4 draw between 1. FC Nürnberg and VfL Wolfsburg. For our forecasting model, it proved to be a challenging weekend in picking outright winners, though broader directional calls stood up far better.
How our forecasts did
The match result calls endured a difficult round: only three of the nine match result forecasts landed correctly. Exact scoreline projections and half-time and full-time calls also struggled, each recording one correct outcome from nine attempts.
By contrast, the win or draw topic did best, with seven of the nine calls landing successfully. The goals-related topics were split down the middle: total goals returned four correct calls from nine, both teams to score finished with four correct from nine, and first team to score also produced four correct calls out of nine.
Results
Friday 9 October
Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 Holstein Kiel
Braunschweig secured a narrow home win to break their defensive drought. Our model projected a Holstein Kiel win and expected more than 2.5 goals with both teams finding the net, but the hosts kept their first clean sheet of the campaign while the win or draw call landed.
1. FC Heidenheim 0-0 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Heidenheim's run of home scoring came to an abrupt halt against Kaiserslautern's resilient backline. The model favoured a home victory and more than 2.5 goals; neither arrived, though the win or draw forecast for Heidenheim to win or draw proved accurate.
Saturday 10 October
SV Darmstadt 98 3-1 Energie Cottbus
Darmstadt capitalised on their home pitch to dispatch Cottbus with three goals. The model landed the home win, win or draw, more than 2.5 goals, and both teams to score, missing only on the opening scorer and exact score.
1. FC Magdeburg 3-0 Hannover 96
Magdeburg continued their prolific home form with a convincing shutout of Hannover. While the high-confidence call for more than 2.5 goals landed, the model missed on an away win and both teams to score as Hannover failed to convert their chances.
VfL Osnabrück 1-1 Dynamo Dresden
Two bottom-half sides cancelled each other out in a tight stalemate. Dynamo Dresden opened the scoring as projected, and both teams to score landed, but the model's call for a Dresden away win and over 2.5 goals missed the mark.
1. FC Nürnberg 4-4 VfL Wolfsburg
An eight-goal thriller saw league top scorer Mohamed Alì Zoma and Nürnberg match Wolfsburg punch for punch. The model was right on Wolfsburg scoring first, both teams scoring, and over 2.5 goals, but missed on an outright away win as the points were shared.
Sunday 11 October
VfL Bochum 0-1 Arminia Bielefeld
Bielefeld snatched all three points with a disciplined away display. Bochum's offensive troubles at home continued; our model missed on the home win and both teams scoring, though the call for a decisive winner either way came through.
Hertha BSC 2-1 SpVgg Greuther Fürth
League leaders Hertha made it seven wins from seven with another productive attacking display. This was the model's cleanest performance of the weekend: Hertha to win, Hertha to win or draw, more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, Hertha to score first, and the exact 2-1 scoreline all landed.
FC St. Pauli 2-0 Karlsruher SC
St. Pauli extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a commanding clean sheet against a struggling Karlsruhe side. The home win, win or draw, St. Pauli opening the scoring, and St. Pauli leading at the break before winning all landed, though Karlsruhe failed to provide the second-half goals needed to push total goals over 2.5.
What we got wrong
The model's biggest blind spot this round was trusting away favourites in closely matched fixtures. Away wins were forecast for Holstein Kiel at Braunschweig, Hannover at Magdeburg, and Wolfsburg at Nürnberg. None of those three away sides took three points.
In Braunschweig, the model leaned on Kiel's sturdiness against a home defence that had been conceding three goals a game on average. Instead, Braunschweig tightened up completely to secure a 1-0 shutout. At Magdeburg, Hannover's underlying chance numbers suggested they could overturn the hosts, but Magdeburg's ruthless finishing maintained their home run while Hannover were shut out entirely. The model also underestimated Kaiserslautern's ability to suffocate high-scoring attacks, projecting goals at Heidenheim that Kaiserslautern's league-leading defence never permitted.
The state of the round
Matchweek 7 cemented Hertha BSC's grip on top spot in the 2. Bundesliga, leaving them clear of the chasing pack with a flawless record. Meanwhile, Kaiserslautern's defensive grit kept them firmly in touch near the top, and Darmstadt took positive steps away from the bottom positions with a much-needed home victory.
