Matchweek 7 in the Eerste Divisie delivered a major shake-up at the summit as league leaders Heracles suffered their first defeat of the campaign, going down 1-0 away to second-placed Almere City FC. Across the ten fixtures, our forecasting model enjoyed strong returns on general fixture flow but ran into stubborn resistance in the head-to-head match result calls, where several home underdogs upended expectations.
How our forecasts did
Starting with our weaker returns, half-time and full-time projections managed only four correct calls out of ten, while exact scoreline forecasts naturally proved difficult, landing two of ten. The model also dropped points on the straight match result, where six of the ten calls landed.
Elsewhere, the model read the broader patterns effectively. Win or draw projections led the round with a flawless ten correct calls from ten. Total goals forecasts also performed solidly, hitting eight of ten as the division produced heavy scoring across several grounds. Both teams to score landed seven of ten, and the first team to score projections finished with six correct from ten.
Results
Friday night brought eight simultaneous kickoffs and plenty of drama across the division.
Almere City FC 1-0 Heracles
Heracles arrived boasting a perfect record of six wins from six matches and an attack averaging four goals per contest, but Almere City's league-best defence held firm. The home side earned a 1-0 win, handing the leaders their first loss and upending our call for an away victory and over 2.5 goals.
Den Bosch 2-1 Helmond Sport
Den Bosch continued their trend of open football at home, taking all three points in a 2-1 win. Our model delivered a clean sweep on this match, correctly forecasting the home win, over 2.5 goals, both teams to score, Den Bosch leading at the break and at full-time, and the exact 2-1 scoreline.
FC Eindhoven 3-1 Emmen
FC Eindhoven halted a three-match losing streak with an emphatic 3-1 victory over high-scoring Emmen. The model expected the fifth-placed visitors to continue their scoring run and take the win, but Eindhoven dominated, though over 2.5 goals and both teams to score both landed.
Jong Ajax 0-0 Roda
Despite Jong Ajax having conceded 22 goals in eight matches prior to Friday, neither side could break the deadlock in a scoreless draw. That blank scuppered projections for a Roda win and both teams to score, though Roda to win or draw held up.
Jong AZ 4-1 FC Volendam
FC Volendam's away troubles deepened as Jong AZ produced a sharp attacking display to run out 4-1 winners. The result defied our cautious lean toward an away win, though the high-scoring nature of the fixture delivered on both total goals and both teams to score.
Jong Utrecht 1-3 VVV Venlo
VVV Venlo maintained their strong position in the promotion places by dispatching Jong Utrecht 3-1. The projection for an away win, over 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and VVV Venlo leading at both intervals all landed as anticipated.
FC OSS 3-0 Dordrecht
FC OSS extended their strong home run by dismantling Dordrecht 3-0. While the home win and over 2.5 goals came through comfortably, Dordrecht's failure to score prevented both teams to score from hitting.
Waalwijk 6-1 MVV
Waalwijk converted their steady home draws into an attacking exhibition, dismantling an in-form MVV side 6-1. The model correctly anticipated a home win, over 2.5 goals, and both teams finding the net.
Vitesse 3-1 Jong PSV U21
On Saturday afternoon, Vitesse capitalised on Jong PSV U21's away vulnerabilities to secure a 3-1 win. The home side opened the scoring and controlled proceedings, ensuring our projections for a home win, over 2.5 goals, and both teams to score were all graded correct.
De Graafschap 1-2 NAC Breda
Sunday's lone match rounded off the weekend in style for our projections. De Graafschap suffered a fifth consecutive league defeat as NAC Breda claimed a 2-1 away victory. The model hit every available projection on the fixture, including the exact 1-2 scoreline, NAC Breda leading at half-time and full-time, and the first goal.
What we got wrong
The round's most significant miss came at Almere, where the model backed Heracles to sustain their relentless attacking output. Heracles entered the weekend with six consecutive victories and 24 goals scored, but Almere City had conceded just four goals all season and restricted the league leaders to zero. The model misjudged the clash between a rampant attack and a rigid backline, projecting an open, multi-goal away victory when Almere's defensive structure ultimately controlled the match.
A secondary blind spot occurred in Amsterdam. Jong Ajax had been shipping goals at an alarming rate, conceding 22 times in their previous eight games. Against an unbeaten Roda defence that had conceded five in six, the model projected Roda to breach the hosts and take a 2-1 win. Instead, Jong Ajax tightened up completely, producing a rare clean sheet in a goalless stalemate.
Matchweek 7 closed the gap at the top of the Eerste Divisie table, ending Heracles' unblemished start while underlining the strength of Almere City and VVV Venlo in the promotion chase.
