The Primeira Liga’s Matchweek 6 threw up a sequence of unexpected results, headlined by unbeaten Sporting CP dropping points against a winless Famalicao and Alverca breaking a dismal away drought, leading to a difficult weekend for our forecasting model where less than half of the match result projections landed.
How our forecasts did
The weekend's uncharacteristic results made for a challenging round across the board. The win or draw category fared best, but even then, only five of the nine calls landed. The both teams to score topic struggled badly as teams broke out of their statistical norms, resulting in just two of the nine forecasts proving correct.
Elsewhere, the model saw four of the nine match result calls land, identical to the returns for the total goals and first team to score categories. The specific exact scoreline and half-time and full-time topics each registered one correct call from nine graded fixtures.

Nacional 1-3 Alverca Alverca arrived with a dreadful away record but flipped the script entirely to take the points. The model’s projection for a Nacional win was incorrect, missing across the board on result and goal calls.
Casa Pia 1-4 FC Porto FC Porto's dominant away form continued as they comfortably dismantled a Casa Pia side that remains without a goal this season. The firm forecast for a FC Porto victory was correct, alongside the call for more than 2.5 goals in the match.
Academico Viseu 2-1 Vitória SC Academico Viseu secured their first home points of the season with a vital victory. The model made a cautious call for a draw, which ultimately missed the mark.
Sunday, September 13
Arouca 1-2 Santa Clara Santa Clara preserved their unbeaten start to the season, simultaneously ending Arouca's perfect home record at the Estádio Municipal. The cautious projection for an Arouca win was incorrect.
Benfica 3-1 GIL Vicente Benfica's blistering attacking form overpowered a previously stingy GIL Vicente defensive unit. The firm call for a Benfica win landed smoothly, as did the projection for more than 2.5 goals.
Famalicao 1-1 Sporting CP Famalicao were searching for their first league victory and managed to frustrate a high-flying Sporting CP side. The firm call for a Sporting CP match result victory was incorrect, though the model correctly projected the visitors to score the opening goal.
Monday, September 14
Rio Ave 3-3 Estrela Rio Ave had failed to score in four of their opening five matches but found the net three times in a chaotic draw. The match result call for an Estrela win missed, but the forecast for more than 2.5 goals in the match was correct.
Moreirense 3-1 Maritimo Moreirense desperately needed a result to arrest their poor start and delivered against a mid-table Maritimo side. The cautious forecast for a Moreirense win landed, as did the half-time and full-time call for the hosts to lead at the break and win the match.
SC Braga 1-0 Estoril SC Braga maintained their flawless recent home defensive record against an Estoril side anchored in the bottom three. The model read this fixture perfectly, cleanly hitting the firm match result call and correctly projecting the exact scoreline of SC Braga 1-0 Estoril.
What we got wrong
The model's most notable misses stemmed from teams snapping established statistical streaks. In Saturday's opener, the model projected a Nacional win based on their solid run of three victories in five home matches. Alverca had suffered five straight away defeats, managing just a single goal and failing to score in four of those trips, making their three-goal outburst a total departure from recent form.
Similarly, Sporting CP arrived at Famalicao unbeaten and averaging nearly three goals a game. Against a Famalicao team that had drawn three and lost two of their opening five fixtures, a firm away win appeared to be the logical projection. Instead, the hosts dug in to secure a point, disrupting the match result and total goals forecasts.
Matchweek 6 served as a sharp reminder of the volatility at both ends of the Primeira Liga table. While heavyweights like FC Porto, Benfica, and SC Braga executed exactly as the data suggested, the struggles of Sporting CP and the sudden awakenings of Alverca and Rio Ave demonstrate how quickly early-season form can dissolve.
