Primeira Liga Matchweek 7 brought a major shift at the top as FC Porto earned a 3-1 victory over Benfica, while Sporting CP dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Arouca. For our forecasting model, it was a punishing weekend on primary outcomes: only one of nine match result calls landed, even as broader calls on totals and coverage lines held up solidly across the nine fixtures.
How our forecasts did
The match result forecasts suffered their worst round of the season, with just one correct call out of nine graded fixtures. Half-time and full-time calls also struggled, converting two of nine, while exact scoreline projections managed one of nine. On the both teams to score topic, four of nine calls were graded correct. In contrast, the model proved far more reliable on match totals and double-sided coverage. Seven of nine total goals calls landed, and seven of nine win or draw projections were correct. On first team to score calls, five of nine calls hit the mark.
Results
Saturday 19 September
GIL Vicente were held to a 1-1 draw by Maritimo after conceding late. The model missed on the GIL Vicente win call, but correct projections landed on GIL Vicente to win or draw, GIL Vicente to score the opening goal, and fewer than 2.5 goals in the match.
Famalicao tore through Nacional in a 0-4 away victory. Our forecast of a draw was well wide of the mark, though the call for Famalicao to win or draw landed, as did Famalicao to score the opening goal and at least one side to be kept off the scoresheet.
Alverca claimed their first home win of the campaign with a 1-0 result against Rio Ave. This was the model's clean sweep of the round: calls for an Alverca win, Alverca to win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, Alverca to score first, Alverca ahead at the break and winning it, and the exact 1-0 scoreline all landed.
Sporting CP surrendered a lead to draw 2-2 with Arouca in Lisbon. Our firm projection of a Sporting CP win failed, though calls for Sporting CP to win or draw, more than 2.5 goals, and Sporting CP to score the opening goal were correct.
Sunday 20 September
Academico Viseu snapped Estrela's unbeaten sequence with an efficient 0-2 away win. The model had projected an Estrela win and both teams to score, missing on both, but correctly called fewer than 2.5 goals.
Vitória SC could only manage a 1-1 draw against Moreirense, having been projected as a firm home winner. While that match result call failed, the projection for Vitória SC to win or draw landed alongside the call for fewer than 2.5 goals.
Casa Pia picked up their first away victory with a 1-2 win over Estoril. The model expected an Estoril win and fewer than 2.5 goals, both of which missed, though projections for both teams to score and Estoril to open the scoring were accurate.
Santa Clara held SC Braga to a 0-0 stalemate in the Azores. A cautious call for an away win fell short, but calls for SC Braga to win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, and at least one side to keep a clean sheet all proved correct.
In the round's headline meeting, FC Porto defeated Benfica 3-1. The model's projection of an away win missed, but calls for a winner either way, more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and Porto leading at half-time and winning at full-time all delivered.
What we got wrong
The collapse in match result accuracy stemmed from placing too much weight on home-field form and underestimating defensive resilience in split fixtures. The model issued firm projections for Sporting CP and Vitória SC to take maximum points at home, yet both were held to draws by stubborn opposition who created few chances but finished them clinically.
In the meeting between Porto and Benfica, the projection favoured Benfica based on their average of nearly five goals per game on the road and the league-leading scoring pace of Vangelis Pavlidis. Instead, Porto's defence, which had conceded just twice entering the weekend, dictated the tempo and neutralized the visitors' forward line entirely.
Round summary
FC Porto leave Matchweek 7 as the clear winners, extending their perfect league record and dealing a direct blow to their primary title rivals. Sporting CP and Benfica both dropped ground, while Famalicao and Academico Viseu produced the standout away performances of the weekend to reshuffle the middle of the table.
