Allsvenskan Matchweek 20 delivered several unexpected results, culminating in IFK Goteborg's emphatic away victory over Mjallby AIF, leaving our forecasting model with a frustrating weekend across the board.
How our forecasts did
Our model found Matchweek 20 difficult to navigate. The win or draw calls performed best, landing seven of the eight graded outcomes. However, the exact scoreline and half-time and full-time forecasts were the worst performers, managing just one correct call from eight each. Three of the eight match result projections were accurate, while the total goals predictions also yielded just three correct calls from eight. Elsewhere, four of the eight both teams to score calls landed, and four of the eight first team to score projections were correct.
Results
Degerfors IF 2-0 Halmstad A relegation clash lacking goals on paper saw Degerfors overcome the absence of defender J. Pikkarainen to secure a vital home victory. Our model correctly called a cautious home win and fewer than 2.5 goals in the match.
Gais 0-0 BK Hacken Gais leaned on their excellent home defensive record to shut out a Hacken side missing Doumbia and Linde. Our projection of a Gais victory missed the mark, though the call for at least one side to be kept off the scoresheet was accurate.
Vasteras SK FK 0-1 Sirius Sirius arrived with the league's best away record and maintained it, exploiting a Vasteras defence missing Frédéric Nsabiyumva. The model backed a Sirius victory and an away opening goal, both of which landed perfectly.
Orgryte IS 1-1 Hammarby FF Title-chasing Hammarby could not repeat the heavy defeat they handed Orgryte earlier in the season, held to a draw by a home side adept at taking a point. Our forecast of a Hammarby victory fell short, though the broader win or draw call landed.
IF Brommapojkarna 2-1 IF Elfsborg Brommapojkarna shrugged off defensive absences to upset an Elfsborg side that arrived unbeaten in five. Our projection favoured the visitors, meaning the match result missed, but the call for more than 2.5 goals was correct.
Kalmar FF 0-1 Djurgardens IF Djurgardens maintained their impressive defensive form, securing a narrow victory against a struggling Kalmar outfit at Guldfageln Arena. This was the model's high point of the round, correctly forecasting the 0-1 exact scoreline.
Malmo FF 0-0 AIK Stockholm Despite missing at least five regular starters, AIK Stockholm extended their road unbeaten streak to six matches against a Malmo side struggling at Eleda Stadion. The model's projection of a Malmo victory and goals failed to materialise.
Mjallby AIF 1-4 IFK Goteborg Mjallby's wretched run of one win in ten continued as Goteborg ruthlessly dismantled them. Our cautious projection of a low-scoring draw was entirely upended by the visitors' attacking display, though the forecast of Goteborg opening the scoring was correct.
What we got wrong
The model vastly underestimated the resilience of AIK Stockholm and the attacking ceiling of IFK Goteborg. In Malmo, the projection leaned heavily into AIK's absentee list—four missing defenders usually dictates a structural collapse. Instead, AIK held firm for a goalless draw, invalidating our expectation of a home victory and multiple goals.
Similarly, the model misread the dynamic in Mjallby. The hosts' poor recent form was factored in, but Goteborg's own away frailties led the system to project a close, low-scoring draw. Goteborg's four-goal outburst shattered the total goals projection and left the exact scoreline forecast far away from reality.
Matchweek 20 highlighted the difficulty of projecting outcomes when defensive injuries fail to translate into conceded goals, and away sides suddenly find their attacking rhythm. As the Allsvenskan progresses, the form lines are becoming increasingly volatile.
