Matchweek 21 of the Swedish Allsvenskan saw top-of-the-table Sirius maintain their strong form, while our forecasting model enjoyed a largely successful weekend across the division.
How our forecasts did
The exact scoreline projections proved the most difficult to pin down this week, with only one of the eight calls landing correctly. Half-time and full-time forecasts were also tricky, returning four correct calls from eight graded. However, the broader match outcome projections performed much better. All eight win or draw predictions proved accurate, making it our most successful category. The model correctly projected the match result in six of the eight fixtures, alongside six correct first team to score calls. Total goals and both teams to score forecasts each finished with five correct calls from the eight matches graded.
Results
BK Hacken 1-1 Mjallby AIF The round opened with a stalemate, as Hacken failed to deliver on our medium-confidence forecast for a home win. Mjallby broke a four-match away scoring drought to claim a point, though our expectation for fewer than 2.5 goals in the match proved correct.
AIK Stockholm 1-4 Vasteras SK FK Our cautious projection of a home victory was comprehensively dismantled, with Vasteras scoring four times despite travelling without their top scorer. The model correctly anticipated more than 2.5 goals in the match and that AIK would score first, but the match result was a heavy miss.
IFK Goteborg 2-1 Halmstad A firm call for a Goteborg victory was vindicated as the hosts leaned on their solid home record. Halmstad's winless run away from home continued in this narrow defeat, and the model correctly predicted the hosts would score the opening goal.
IF Elfsborg 1-0 Kalmar FF Elfsborg extended their strong record at Borås Arena, securing a victory that aligned with our medium-confidence match result forecast. Kalmar remained winless on the road, while our expectation for fewer than 2.5 goals landed securely.
Hammarby FF 3-1 IF Brommapojkarna Hammarby utilised their formidable home advantage to comfortably defeat a porous Brommapojkarna side. The model firmly expected a home win and more than 2.5 goals in the match, both of which landed without issue.
Malmo FF 4-1 Orgryte IS Despite missing three regular starters, Malmo easily overcame relegation-threatened Orgryte. Our model correctly anticipated a Malmo victory, both teams scoring, and the hosts finding the net first.
Djurgardens IF 2-0 Gais Djurgarden's strong scoring form at the Tele2 Arena continued with a comfortable victory over a Gais side missing their top scorer. A firm home win forecast proved correct, as did the expectation that at least one side would be kept off the scoresheet.
Sirius 2-0 Degerfors IF The league leaders demonstrated why they boast the division's most potent attack, validating our firm match result forecast. This fixture also provided our sole correct exact scoreline call of the round, landing a cautious projection of a 2-0 Sirius win.
What we got wrong
The two match result misses this week both came in the opening days of the round. At the Bravida Arena, the model anticipated a medium-confidence victory for BK Hacken, noting the hosts' tendency to draw matches but expecting them to overcome a Mjallby AIF side mired in dreadful form. Mjallby had lost eight of their last ten and were suffering a four-match scoring drought on the road, yet they found the necessary goal to secure a 1-1 draw.
The model also misread the situation at Strawberry Arena, where it leaned cautiously toward an AIK Stockholm win. The projection acknowledged that both sides were missing four regular starters and that the hosts possessed a leaky defence, but underestimated just how vulnerable AIK would be. Vasteras SK FK, despite travelling without their leading marksman, managed to tear through the home side in a 4-1 victory.
Sirius retain their grip on the top of the Allsvenskan, while the heavy defeat for AIK and Hacken's dropped points at home complicate the battle in the upper half of the table as the season heads towards its final stages.
