Matchweek 5 of the 2026 La Liga season delivered high-scoring statements from the division's heavyweights, and our forecasting model produced a strong overall return across the fixtures.
How our forecasts did
Our total goals and win or draw categories tied for the best performance of the round, with nine of the ten calls landing in both metrics. The match result projections also held up reasonably well, with six of the ten calls proving correct, while seven of the ten both teams to score forecasts hit the mark. Six of the ten first team to score projections were accurate. Unsurprisingly, the highly specific exact scoreline topic proved to be the most difficult, with just two of the ten calls landing, closely followed by half-time and full-time forecasts, where only three of the ten were correct.
Results
Friday, September 11
Sevilla 1-0 Valencia Sevilla picked up a narrow victory to keep Valencia rooted to the foot of the table. Our medium-confidence forecast for a Sevilla win proved correct, as did the projection for fewer than 2.5 goals in the match.
Saturday, September 12
Racing Santander 2-1 Alaves Racing Santander kept El Sardinero a fortress by defeating the early surprise package of the season. The model correctly anticipated a Racing Santander victory and impressively caught the exact 2-1 scoreline.
Osasuna 0-2 Espanyol Espanyol handed Osasuna their first home goals conceded of the campaign. Our projection for an Osasuna win missed the mark, though the call for fewer than 2.5 goals landed.
Athletic Club 1-1 Elche Athletic Club's struggles continued with a frustrating draw in Bilbao. A medium-confidence call for an Athletic Club win was incorrect, but the model accurately foresaw both teams finding the net in another chaotic Elche away day.
Real Madrid 4-1 Rayo Vallecano Real Madrid remained untouchable at the Bernabeu, taking full advantage of a Rayo Vallecano side missing the suspended Jorge de Frutos. Our firm call for a Real Madrid win was correct, as was the projection for more than 2.5 goals.
Sunday, September 13
Celta Vigo 1-1 Malaga Two of the league's most goal-shy sides played out a tense stalemate at Balaídos. We incorrectly projected a Celta Vigo win, but a cautious call for fewer than 2.5 goals in the match was perfectly aligned with the outcome.
Levante 2-4 Barcelona Barcelona's devastating early-season form continued with a dominant road victory. A high-confidence call for a Barcelona win landed comfortably, alongside a correct projection for more than 2.5 goals.
Getafe 1-1 Deportivo La Coruna Getafe navigated the absence of three regular starters, including Z. Romero and Francho, to secure a point. The model had a fantastic read on this fixture, correctly making a cautious call for a draw and perfectly predicting the 1-1 exact scoreline.
Real Sociedad 0-3 Atletico Madrid Atletico Madrid extended their psychological edge over Real Sociedad with a comprehensive victory. Our call for an Atletico Madrid win proved accurate, as did the projection for more than 2.5 goals.
Monday, September 14
Villarreal 1-2 Real Betis Real Betis arrived in strong form and took all three points against a depleted Villarreal side. The model's cautious call for a Villarreal win was incorrect, though it accurately projected that both teams would score.
What we got wrong
Our most glaring misses in Matchweek 5 came from trusting home sides with strong defensive records to hold off chaotic visitors. At El Sadar, the model backed Osasuna on the premise that they had yet to concede at home this season. Instead, Espanyol found a way through to claim a 2-0 victory, completely overturning the expectation of an Osasuna result.
Similarly, Athletic Club were heavily favoured to produce a response in Bilbao after consecutive league defeats. The model leaned on the fact that visiting Elche had been conceding at a rate of two per game on the road, but underestimated Elche's persistent goal threat. The match ended 1-1, ruining a medium-confidence projection for an Athletic Club win.
Lastly, the model made a cautious call for a Villarreal win against Real Betis. While our analysis noted the double centre-back doubt surrounding Foyth and Romero as a significant concern, the forecast ultimately trusted Villarreal's underlying quality over Betis's momentum, a decision that proved costly when the visitors exploited that instability to secure a 2-1 victory.
Matchweek 5 highlighted the devastating attacking rhythm of the division's elite, while exposing the frailties of teams carrying defensive injuries and early-season baggage.
