La Liga Matchweek 6 delivered 31 goals across ten fixtures, headlined by Barcelona's commanding 7-2 demolition of Racing Santander. Our forecasting model turned in a steady round overall, landing six of ten match result projections and eight of ten win or draw calls, though high-confidence home projections for Alaves and Real Sociedad fell flat.
How our forecasts did
The win or draw projections performed best across the round, with eight of the ten calls landing. First team to score and match result calls also held up well, each delivering six correct outcomes from ten fixtures. At the other end of the sheet, exact scoreline projections predictably struggled, returning just one correct outcome from ten, while half-time and full-time forecasts saw only four of ten land. The total goals and both teams to score categories were split down the middle, each finishing with five correct calls out of ten.
Results
Real Sociedad 0-0 Celta Vigo opened the round with a scoreless affair; our call for a home win missed, though Real Sociedad to win or draw landed.
Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Espanyol followed, where our projection of a Rayo Vallecano win proved accurate despite the hosts missing the suspended Jorge de Frutos.
Alaves 0-1 Valencia produced a significant upset; our firm call for a home win missed entirely after the visitors grabbed all three points.
Elche 2-3 Real Madrid saw the visitors hold on in a five-goal thriller; our projection for a Real Madrid win and over 2.5 total goals landed comfortably.
Atletico Madrid 4-0 Osasuna ran smoothly for the model, correctly forecasting an Atletico Madrid victory and over 2.5 total goals.
Deportivo La Coruna 0-1 Sevilla ended the newly promoted side's unbeaten start; our match result forecast missed, but the call for a winner either way was correct.
Barcelona 7-2 Racing Santander saw the league leaders run riot; the model's call for a Barcelona win, opening goal, and over 2.5 goals all landed.
Real Betis 1-0 Getafe delivered our cleanest card of the round, correctly forecasting the home win, fewer than 2.5 goals, a clean sheet for at least one side, and the exact scoreline of Real Betis 1-0 Getafe.
Malaga 1-3 Villarreal saw the visitors secure three points as projected by our match result call, though the scoreline proved wider than anticipated.
Levante 3-1 Athletic Club concluded the round with an unexpected reverse; our projection of an away win missed as the hosts struck three times.
What we got wrong
The round's heaviest failure came at Mendizorrotza in Alaves against Valencia. The model issued a high-confidence projection for an Alaves win, leaning on their run of three straight home victories and an average of three goals per match, alongside Valencia's record of ten goals conceded and absence of two defensive starters. Instead, Valencia kept their first clean sheet of the campaign and took a 1-0 win, overturning both the match result and win or draw calls.
The model also misread Levante's hosting of Athletic Club. Expecting the visitors to control proceedings, the projection favored an Athletic Club win, but Levante's chaotic home tendency resurfaced to take a 3-1 victory and defeat our match result forecast.
Barcelona's relentless attacking form preserves their perfect record at the top of the division, while Valencia's unexpected victory at Alaves provides them with relief at the foot of the table.
